People have often wondered whether Eve Arnold’s photograph of Marilyn Monroe reading Ulysses was staged, or meant as a contradiction.
Eve was clear that it came from something real.
Marilyn had brought Ulysses with her because she was studying it in her acting classes with Lee Strasberg. The passage she was reading was Molly Bloom’s soliloquy, a stream of consciousness written with almost no punctuation. It is a text made to be heard as much as read.
That detail changes the photograph.
It is not Marilyn pretending to be intellectual. It is not a joke at her expense. It is a glimpse of her curiosity, intelligence and seriousness as an actor.
It also shows why Eve Arnold’s photographs feel so important now. Eve looked without rushing to judgement. She saw people in their complexity, not through the image the world had already made of them.
At a time when public images are judged faster than ever, that way of looking feels more necessary than ever.

This is Eve’s Rolleiflex, the oldest of the cameras recently photographed for the Estate by the brilliant Rick Guest.
Eve used this camera to make some of her great square-format photographs, including portraits of Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, her Harlem fashion series, as well as this wonderful 1950 image of a woman standing outside the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
It was such a pleasure to work with Rick, who has made these extraordinary new photographs of Eve’s cameras. His work with historic objects is remarkable. Through his Legacy+Art project, he has photographed objects that carry the marks of cultural history, including Hemingway’s typewriter, Muhammad Ali’s boxing glove and Paul McCartney’s guitars.
There is something deeply moving about seeing Eve’s camera in this way. Not just as a tool, but as an object of witness. A camera that helped her look closely, patiently and compassionately at the people and worlds in front of her.

On the set of The Misfits, Eve Arnold photographed Marilyn Monroe with Montgomery Clift in the Nevada desert.
The colour and light are extraordinary. You can almost feel the heat coming off the car, the shade, the equipment and the desert around them.
But what stays with me is Marilyn’s expression. She looks luminous, still composed, still doing the work. And yet, if you look closely, you can sense the strain beneath the surface: the heat, the production, the marriage and the pressure of having to prove herself again and again.
The Misfits was written for Marilyn by Arthur Miller, but by the time the film was made, their marriage was already strained. The role was meant to show what Marilyn could do as an actor, but it also placed a heavy burden on her. She was carrying Miller’s expectations, the emotional weight of the part and the exhausting need to be recognised as a serious artist. And then there was the gruelling desert heat, which made everything harder.
Eve’s photograph holds all of this without forcing it. She allows the image to glow, but never lets the glamour hide what Marilyn is carrying.
After a week of extraordinary heat across Europe, we’ve extended the special NPG exhibition price for a few more days.

In a Chicago Airport washroom, Eve Arnold saw a private moment become performance.
Eve later recalled the scene in a BBC interview: “She went into the ladies room and, you know, as another woman I just followed after. I didn’t intend to shoot but she looked so wonderful with her skirts hiked up…”
What fascinated Eve was the almost instantaneous shift that happened when Marilyn sensed the camera. As Eve put it elsewhere, “there she was. She was a movie star.”
Even in the fleeting privacy of an airport washroom, Marilyn seemed able to summon the image the world desired — as if silently saying what Eve understood so well: “Let’s make a Marilyn.”
The photograph does not feel stolen. It feels collaborative. Marilyn knew how to become “Marilyn”; Eve knew how to see the intelligence inside that performance.

Eve Arnold’s Marilyn Monroe photographs are now on view in Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
The exhibition belongs to a wider reappraisal of Marilyn: not only as icon, myth or image, but as a woman of intelligence, agency, discipline and artistic ambition.

Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures celebrates Marilyn Monroe - born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 - as a visionary actor and image-maker, examining how she created and shaped her public image in the context of the classical Hollywood studio system.
Presenting hundreds of original objects, including posters, portraits, photographs, production documents, letters and rarely seen personal materials - many on display for the first time - the exhibition offers unique insight into her agency in becoming a Hollywood icon.
The exhibition also features an extensive array of Monroe’s screen-worn costumes, ranging from a dress featured in Love Happy (1949) to items from her final and unfinished film, Something’s Got to Give (1962).
The Academy is paying special attention to photographer Eve Arnold as an important female creative contemporary. Eve’s iconic, intimate portraits of Marilyn Monroe on the 1960 set of The Misfits and beyond, play a key part in the visual narrative of Monroe’s life and celebration of her legacy.
The exhibition in LA continues through to 28th February 2027.
