For the memory sequences in “Is It Time?” I wanted the past to feel like it was being seen through water, because for this character, it literally is. The whole film’s transitionary language is built around him diving into water to enter his own memories, so every time we’re inside one of those sequences, the audience should feel like they’re underwater with him to an extent.
The technique was simple in concept but took some figuring out in practice. We filled a fish tank three-quarters with water and shot through the glass, using the subsurface reflection on the water’s surface to distort the image. What you’re seeing in those shots isn’t the scene directly, it’s actually the scene reflected off the underside of the water. The result is this fluid, breathing quality that no adobe effect or vfx has ever convincingly replicated for me.
One thing I noticed pretty quickly: the farther your subject is from the tank, the shallower your viewing angle has to be to catch their reflection. It’s pure geometry, but it meant every single shot needed the tank repositioned. We built a custom rig with a pancake, ratchets and lowboys so we could dial it in precisely for each setup.
To push the distortion further, I paired it with Petzval glass, which has this natural swirly character that felt like it was made for this. ARRI LOOK lenses handled the more controlled memory cues, and we rounded out the package with an Angenieux Optimo 24-290 and Zeiss Super Speeds for the rest of the film.
🎥 I shot on the ALEXA 35 for the LogC4 latitude, but honestly also for the texture. There’s a nostalgia baked into that image that served the story.
For movement, I put a halo head on the sticks to get that subtle, almost imperceptible motion, because water is never truly still, and neither should the frame be.
Only in hopelessness will you find freedom…
