The beautifully toxic Bleeding Heart, Lamprocapnos spectabilis. Originally introduced to North America by way of Siberia and China, it has found its way into New England forests. Along with its wild Eastern counterpart, Dicentra eximia, the flowers and leaves of this plant can cause nausea, convulsions, vomiting and diarrhea. Historically it has been explored as a dewormer along with various medical and dental applications that have no modern scientific basis.

Wild edible Wood Blewits, Lepista (Clitocybe) nuda. Known for their bold lilac color, often it doesn’t take much time for the coloration of these mushrooms to fade especially in November as the falling leaves quickly conceal them. Therefore, other details should be used to accurately identify them for beginners. Be mindful, as they do have toxic lookalikes, like our Pearly Webcap, Cortinarius alboviolaceus, which tends to have looser gills, a rusty brown spore print (vs Blewit’s white to pale pink). Wild edible Winter Chanterelles, Craterellus tubaeformis. Tracking these in similar habitat to Black Trumpets and among Belly Button Hedgehogs, these are some of my favorite treats of the season. Also known as Yellowfoot Chanterelles, the high contrast of their dark caps and bright yellow stems give them away in the leaf litter.

Wolf Farts! 💨 Wild edible Pear Shaped Puffballs, Apioperdon pyriforme, sadly no longer called the Wolf Fart Puffball (formerly Lycoperdon pyriforme). One of few puffball species that grow on wood, PSPs are faintly spiny to smooth, unlike its cousin the Gem-Studded Puffball, Apioperdon (Lycoperdon) perlatum. Perlatum refers to the wider spines that are more like studs and are rounded (formerly L. gemmatum meaning “jeweled”) Puffballs like these are edible when their interiors are absolutely and completely white.

Perfect little Hen! The next flush of wild edible Hen of the Woods, Grifola frondosa, is upon us. Did you know that the Japanese word for this mushroom is “Maitake”, and that it translates to “dancing mushroom”, a reference to the physical elation exhibited upon finding this species in the wild? There is something to be said for the psychological and chemical effects on the body when sourcing your own food, as opposed to the detachment that comes from not knowing where your food really comes from.

Wild edible Hen of the Woods (Maitake) Mushroom, Grifola frondosa, taking advantage of the limited precipitation we’ve been afforded. It’s interesting to compare the differences in locations where they are successful and not yet opportune. Foraging is also about unraveling the subtle reasons why: why fruit now, why fruit there? Slowing down to take the time to ask, take notes and visual cues from the landscape. We owe it to Nature to learn the language.

There are more Hens coming. This batch was at the prime state I prefer. Bright white in the pores. Clean, yet to become the shelter of other critters from the elements, or found by the slugs of noteworthy size lurking about.

Assisting the spores of a breached Common Earthball, Scleroderma citrinum. Unlike many species of puffball fungi, Earthballs are not edible, and generally considered toxic. Their interior spore mass quickly darkens with age and the dry, rough pigskin surface is an easier identifier.
