First painting of the year!
I’m deeply grateful to the for supporting my practice over the next six months with an Artist Project Grant. Time — real, sustained time — is the most generous gift for a painter, and I don’t take it lightly.
I’m currently on an enforced pause from the studio (my studio manager has chickenpox), but just before this unexpected break I was in that beautiful rhythm again — playing, testing, cooking up new paintings. There’s something beginning to form, and I’m excited about where it’s heading.

My current talks about future programs often include one question: "Hhhmmm-hhhmm, yes, of course... but/and, can we do that in the afternoon?" Pfeeew, 40-something-me loves a good matinee. We can still do all the things! We darken the room, project images, light candles, serve tea... and we can still make it to the restaurant or kitchen in time to have dinner at 18.30h. And be on someone's sofa -perhaps our own- at 22.00h.
Something in the water, something in the stars, something in the snow... I don't know. It just feels like a great year for cuddling and curling up.

My studio manager, who currently has a fever, chest infection and ear infection (thanks daycare 🤬), was on hand to do inspections, hide my inks and make sure everything was to her satisfaction. 🥰

The painting 'Having Your Cake and Eating It Too' (2019) by Esiri Erheriene-Essi is now on view at the Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem. The work was acquired just last year with support from the Mondriaanfonds and the association of friends of the Frans Hals Museum. Congratulations again to the museum on their beautiful acquisition.
Erheriene-Essi portrays a festive moment: a birthday boy cuts the cake. In the background, you can see archive footage of the Windrush generation. They came to Great Britain from the Caribbean after the Second World War at the invitation of the government to rebuild a broken country. In 2018, however, the British citizenship of their descendants was questioned. The title refers to this: you can't have everything
