A large part of pottery production in Mexico still relies on traditional firing methods that generate significant amounts of smoke, affect artisans’ health, and harm the environment.
The Smokeless Wood Kilns promoted by the National School of Ceramics offer a more efficient alternative: they reduce emissions, use less fuel, and improve working conditions for potters, while preserving the traditional techniques that give their work its unique identity.
We want to bring this technology to more communities across the country.

The pottery tradition of Uayma, Yucatán, has deep roots in the history of the Yucatán Peninsula.
Recognized since the mid-20th century as one of the main centers of Maya ceramic production, this community has preserved, for generations, the knowledge of working with clay to create everyday, ceremonial, and ritual objects.
Today, this craft remains alive thanks to the work of the Espadas Xooc family.
With the support of Tajín Industries and architect Miguel Quintana, President of Grupo Xcaret, the National School of Ceramics arrived in Uayma last January to collaborate with local artisans in the building of the first Smokeless Wood Kiln in the state.

Malene Hartmann Rasmussen uses ceramics as a medium for fantasy.
Her enigmatic sculptures draw on personal memories, Scandinavian folklore, and nature, and witnessing her creative process during the workshop “Storytelling in Clay,” held at the National School of Ceramics over the past two weeks, has been a unique learning opportunity.

Underglaze formulation during the workshop “Storytelling in Clay”, taught by Danish artist Malene Hartmann.
Designed to be painted onto bisque-fired pottery (or bone-dry), this decorative technique allows artists to create designs and patterns that emerge through an upper glaze layer, adding greater visual depth and character to the ceramic surface.

Metal oxides are responsible for most of the colors found in ceramic glazes.
They are derived from metals such as iron, cobalt, copper, chromium, manganese, and nickel. During firing, these oxides interact with silica and fluxes, and their final color changes dramatically depending on the kiln atmosphere: oxidation or reduction.
That is why the same oxide can produce very different results in an electric kiln versus a gas kiln. They are used in very small amounts — usually less than 5% — because they are extremely powerful colorants.
Want to master glaze chemistry?
Apply to the workshop “Triaxial Glaze Research and Development Using Natural Materials”, taught by Japanese engineer Yusuke Suzuki.
Applications close this week!

Every day, Mexican women potters transform the craft from within their communities. Through innovations in forms, techniques, and designs, they redefine local traditions and open new paths for ceramics.
Their work shows how creativity within tradition can influence the production of an entire town and project it beyond its place of origin.
