When I was little, I lived in Yokohama, and my dad bought me a book called Akai Kutsu. It was the first book I ever had, and I remember being so in love with the illustrations.
Years later, I wanted to create my own interpretation of this story that stayed with me for so long.
I don’t remember every detail of the story anymore, but I remember the feeling. A little girl, red shoes, and a quiet, melancholic story that felt both beautiful and sad.
The story is said to be inspired by a real girl named Kimi, a Japanese girl from the early 1900s whose story became connected to the famous “Red Shoes” tale. It carries a feeling of longing and a life that could have been different.
The last slide is the actual book my dad gave me when I was a child 🤍
小さい頃、横浜に住んでいた時に父が買ってくれた『赤い靴』という絵本。
それが私が初めて手にした本で、子どもの頃から挿絵が大好きでした。
何年経っても心に残っていて、いつか自分なりの解釈で描いてみたいと思っていた作品です。
物語の細かい内容はもう全部覚えていないけれど、赤い靴を履いた女の子の姿と、少し寂しくて美しい雰囲気だけはずっと覚えています。
『赤い靴』は、実在した少女、きみちゃんの話がもとになったと言われています。
叶わなかった未来への憧れや切なさを感じさせるこの物語は、今でも多くの人の心に残っています。
最後の写真は、子どもの頃に父が買ってくれた実際の絵本です🤍
