PUSHING THE LIMITS OF ROBOTIC MOVEMENT
What does it take to teach a robot to move with human-level agility? At Boston Dynamics, the answer lies in experimentation, iteration, and a deep understanding of physics. In its latest work with the Atlas humanoid, the team demonstrates how robots can learn to leap, vault, and land with remarkable precision, turning parkour into a proving ground for advanced mobility.
This is not performance for performance’s sake. Each jump and backflip is a test of perception, balance, and control. By training Atlas on complex motion sequences, engineers are refining systems that allow robots to respond to real-world conditions in real time, adjusting posture and force as environments change.
The broader implication is practical. Robots that can adapt their movement dynamically are better suited for environments built for humans, from industrial sites to disaster zones. What looks like choreography today is laying the groundwork for machines that can operate reliably in unpredictable physical spaces tomorrow.

When President Trump announced the U.S. military’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the cartoonist Barry Blitt decided that his image for the cover of the January 19, 2026, issue could hark back to Gilded Age political cartoons that skewered the oil barons and petty tyrants of the era. “After years of depicting Donald Trump, I did not need any photo reference to draw this,” Blitt said. “His features are chiselled into my visual memory, and I’m not particularly thrilled about it.”

This year’s show will make that tension clear. The winners will not be the devices that shout “AI” the loudest, but those that demonstrate software maturity, refined user experience, and real usefulness.
From smart glasses competing on execution rather than features, to health tech and smart homes expanding AI into more intimate spaces, CES 2026 underscores a quieter truth: the next phase of innovation is less about novelty and more about discipline.
In a market where everything is intelligent, judgment, design, and restraint matter most.

But experts, caution that a number of realities—including international oil prices and longer-term questions of stability in the country—are likely to make this oil revolution much harder to execute than Trump seems to think.
Venezuela sits on some of the largest oil reserves in the world. But production of oil there has plummeted since the mid 1990s, after President Hugo Chavez nationalized much of the industry. The country was producing just 1.3 million barrels of oil each day in 2018, down from a high of more than 3 million barrels each day in the late 1990s (the US, the top producer of crude oil in the world, produced an average of 21.7 million barrels each day in 2023). Sanctions placed on Venezuela during the first Trump administration, meanwhile, have driven production down even further.
The president views energy geopolitics “almost like the world is a Settlers of Catan board—you kidnap the president of Venezuela and, ipso facto, you now control the oil,” says Rory Johnson, a Canadian oil market researcher. “ I do think he legitimately, to a degree, believes that. It’s not true, but I think that’s an important frame for how he’s justifying and driving the momentum of his policy.”

Amazon has announced roughly 14,000 corporate job cuts just ahead of the holiday season, signalling a major shift in how one of the world’s largest employers is thinking about talent, tech, and the future of the organization.
What’s driving this? Two dominant themes: AI acceleration and operational lean-down. According to the internal memo to employees, the company is committed to getting “even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets.”
The memo also says “this generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet,” and that the company must “become a leaner company with fewer layers.”
And the cuts may not be over — the memo hints at more reductions to come in 2026.
For the workforce, the message is urgent: the future of employment is increasingly about agility, tech fluency, and aligning your personal skill-portfolio to places where value is expanding — not where it is being compressed.

One employee said their jaw dropped at the message, worried it crossed the line into political coercion and violated the Hatch Act—a law designed to keep federal workers free from political pressure at work. Using the template could cost someone their job.
“This feels like coerced speech. The government should not force employees to spread propaganda,” says public policy expert Don Moynihan.

The Trump administration has introduced a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applications, transforming what was once a gateway for global talent into an economic barrier.
At stake is more than policy: the very pipeline that helped launch companies like Tesla and Instagram. The H-1B program has long been a catalyst for U.S. innovation, enabling firms to tap into global expertise. By reframing access as a luxury rather than a necessity, the U.S. risks pushing tomorrow’s innovators to other ecosystems.
The intent is clear: protect domestic workers. But the unintended consequence may be a talent exodus that undermines America’s competitive edge in technology, medicine, and research. For companies dependent on global skill, this isn’t just a cost increase. It’s a strategic inflection point.
