We’ve been fighting for these little guys for a long time — and we’re not stopping. When commercial fishing groups challenged the federal decision to end California’s decades-long “no-otter zone,” we intervened, took it to court, and won. Southern sea otters are now reclaiming their historic range and restoring the kelp forests they depend on. 🌿🌊
Fun reminder: these are keystone species — without them, entire kelp forest ecosystems collapse. They also eat 25% of their body weight every day.
Here’s to the otters, and to the work still ahead. 💙

May 19th marks the 11th anniversary of the Plains Oil Spill at Refugio Beach, one of the largest environmental disasters in California history. Oil spread 150 miles down the coast, poisoning marine habitats and wildlife. The pipeline responsible? Sable Offshore has restarted it.
And the threat doesn't stop there. The Trump administration is also pushing to open California's coast to new offshore oil leasing and development and wants to allow fracking right here in the Santa Barbara Channel.
The fight is not over. EDC remains committed to protecting our coastline.
"This is one of the most precious ecological systems on the planet, and we have to protect it." — Linda Krop, EDC Chief Counsel
On May 19, 2015, 11 years ago, the Las Floras Pipeline burst. 142,000+ gallons of oil spilled into the Pacific.
Estimates reach a cost of $870,000,000.
And oil is flowing again. We need to stand together to protect our coastline. For future generations. This isn’t political, this is self-defense. #stopsable #getoilout #805action #ourfuture #hope

➡️ California State Parks — suing Sable for trespassing in Gaviota State Park
➡️ California State Lands Commission — moving to terminate Sable's offshore leases

➡️ Coastal communities, tribes, and advocates — sent 72,000+ letters and are never backing down
Newsom called out Trump's pipeline lie in April. Now is the time to match the moment.
Eleven years after Refugio, Sable is pumping oil through a corroded pipeline in open defiance of a court order. California has every tool available; let's use them all.
11 years later, oil is flowing through the very same pipeline. This time, it is owned and operated by Houston-based Sable Offshore – a company with $18 million dollars in outstanding fines from the Coastal Commission, 21 federal criminal charges, numerous injunctions, and a blatant disregard for California state laws and regulatory agencies.
On Sunday, to commemorate the anniversary of this tragic spill, over 100 community members, youth leaders, students, organizations, and more came out to Refugio State Beach. We heard from powerful guest speakers, paddled out into the water, and reminded ourselves of the value and importance of protecting our natural spaces from corporate greed and recklessness.
Join us as we stand together to protect our coastline. For our oceans. For our community. For our future.
