Dabei bezieht sich Kendall auf die Verschmelzung verschiedener Kulturen, wie sie im afrokaribischen Raum das Kreolische als eigene Kultur hervorgebracht hat.

🎸WHY WE PLAY ist der erste abendfüllende Dokumentarfilm über die Arbeit des Ensemble Modern, eines der weltweit führenden Ensembles für zeitgenössische Musik. Der Film begleitet Musiker:innen und Komponist:innen nicht nur auf der Bühne, sondern insbesondere während intensiver Probenprozesse.
📣Dabei wird hörbar, wie sich durch Suchen, Verwerfen und gegenseitiges Annähern eine gemeinsame musikalische Sprache formt. Jährlich erarbeitet das Ensemble Modern so rund 70 Werke und bewegt sich dabei kontinuierlich in ungewöhnlichen, oft experimentellen Klangwelten.
🥁Darüber hinaus beleuchtet der Film die Organisationsstruktur des in Frankfurt am Mainansässigen Ensembles und macht sichtbar, wie viele engagierte Beteiligte zum Gelingen jeder Aufführung beitragen. Sie sprechen über seinen Film „Ensemble Modern – Why we play“, der ab Juni 2026 in die Kinos kommt. Gemeinsam gehen sie der Frage nach, warum das ein ungewöhnlicher Musikfilm ist.
Ausgangspunkt seiner Arbeit ist dabei ein prägendes Erlebnis: ein Konzert des Ensemble Modern und Frank Zappa im Jahr 1992, das ihm den entscheidenden Impuls gab, Dokumentarfilme zu machen.
Zudem tauschen sich beide über Ausbildungswege für junge Film und Klangregisseur*innen aus und reflektieren ihre eigenen künstlerischen Erfahrungen.
