（資料 21）下顎の成長の様相を経時的に見ることができます。むろん全体的な増大傾向がありますが、特に下顎枝の成長に焦点を当てることが必要です。この下顎枝の成長は単に口腔容積の成長ではなく、咽頭喉頭の成長に大きな影響を与えます。咽頭喉頭の成長は、頸椎の成長と下顎の成長が相関します。以下は「歯学生のための歯科矯正学」より抜粋した成長についての記述です。
下顎骨の成長発育
下顔面を構成する下顎骨（mandible）は鎖骨とともに最初に骨化がはじまる膜性骨である。下顎骨の発生には第一鰓弓のメッケル軟骨は直接関与せず、胎生 6 週にその外側、下歯槽神経がオトガイ枝と切歯枝に分岐する部位に膜内骨化が始まり、上方、下方および内側方に骨化が広がって下顎体と下顎枝を形成する。出生時、下顎枝の関節突起は筋突起より小さく、下顎角の形成も十分ではない。下顎角は鈍角を呈している。出生時、左右に分離していた下顎体は下顎結合部で生後 4 〜 12 か月の間に骨性癒着して下顎骨は単一の骨となる。
下顎骨は 3 つの基本的な構成要素（基幹部、歯槽部、筋付着部）に分けて考えられる。基幹部は下顎頭から下顎結合までの下顎骨の芯部（コア / core）をなす部分で、下顎管を保護し、卵円孔から下顎孔を通ってオトガイ孔に向かう弧をなしている。
歯槽部は歯の発育と萌出に関連し、歯の喪失は歯槽部骨の吸収をもたらす。筋付着部は下顎骨に付着する筋が機能マトリックスとして働き、筋機能が筋付着部の最終形態を決定する。側頭筋は筋突起に、咬筋と内側翼突筋は下顎角に、外側翼突筋は関節突起に付着し、それらの筋切除、支配神経の切断あるいは運動神経核の破壊によって筋突起、下顎角部の形態形成が阻害される。したがって、下顎骨は、その成長を考えるとき外因性要因によって影響を受ける筋付着部と歯槽部を有する馬蹄型の長骨とみなすことが出来る。舌や口腔周囲筋など上下歯列弓、外側の筋機能も下顎骨成長に間接的な影響を及ぼす。
このような、機能環境のもとで成長する下顎骨は、顔面骨のうち出生後の成長量が最も大きい骨であり、また、その形態に最も変異が多く認められる骨でもある。
下顎骨は、その成長を考えるとき外因性要因によって影響を受ける筋付着部と歯槽部を有する馬蹄型の長骨とみなすことが出来る。舌や口腔周囲筋など上下歯列弓、外側の筋機能も下顎骨成長に間接的な影響を及ぼす。
