During his PhD, he pioneered a first-of-its-kind predictive gas sensor capable of identifying and quantifying multiple gases simultaneously in complex environments. Last week, a rather lovely thing happened to our Department of Engineering Library team. We were nominated for and won a Professional Services Recognition Award in the category of 'Creating an Inclusive and Welcoming Community'.

The team received multiple nominations, that included senior staff members across their School and Department, and would like to thank all those who put our names forward and to everyone for their kind words and messages of support.

Words that included: "The team take great care to ensure the library is a space where inclusivity and diversity are celebrated... They are truly dedicated to creating a welcoming and psychologically safe environment... The wealth of support provided to the team's nominations is a testament to the work they are doing and how truly valued it is by their colleagues and students."

Electrical #engineer Dr Amparo Güemes Gonzalez is part of a #research team that has been able to measure the electrical signals in the ‘second brain in our guts’ for the first-ever time, giving renewed understanding to its interconnection with the #brain. 🧠

Scientists from our Department, and have created a miniature device, thinner than the width of a hair, that can be placed between the layers of the #colon to record these signals.

Amparo, Royal Academy of Engineering and Rosetrees Research Fellow at the Bioelectronics Laboratory, Department of #Engineering, said: “With our chronic implant, we can, for the first time, record real-time signals from the ‘second brain’ in the over extended periods.

“This allows us to study how the gut responds to physiological stimuli, such as stress, and how it reacts to treatments or dietary changes, something that wasn’t possible with previous methods. This opens the door to a much deeper understanding of gut–brain communication and its impact on. It was just not possible to do this before.”

How did this Economics graduate end up working on next-generation Mars robots for NASA?

Meet Lane Painter ( 2022) whose passion for robots took him from Chicago to where the global nature of his Master's course quickly expanded his horizons.

“I was the only outlier, coming in with an Economics background. We tackled live engineering challenges with over 30 companies across Europe and Asia, traveling to apply what we learned first hand.”

His time at Cambridge would prove pivotal to his future with his learning extending far beyond the lecture theatre.

“I came to Cambridge expecting rigorous study and academic exploration, but I hadn’t anticipated how rich the College culture would be, and how easy it was to meet people and have meaningful conversations. I was frequently meeting others working on fascinating research across every field, and constantly exposed to new ideas and industries.

“Darwin’s a postgraduate College, so it was really the first time I’d been surrounded by people so immersed in their own research. A lot of my friends happened to be studying Law, and through countless conversations at formal dinners, over coffee, or in College bars, I found myself continually in an environment of learning, often without even realising or expecting it. By the time I left, I had developed a real appreciation for policy that's really stayed with me, thanks in large part to those informal chats.

“What I came to realise was that Cambridge offered the ideal mix: policy conversations at Darwin, technical learning with my cohort, and hands-on management and strategy through my course. That blend mirrors the work I do now at NASA. The way I approach problems in the Mars programme was shaped by the foundations laid for me at Cambridge, where learning wasn’t confined to the classroom –⁠ it was part of everything, trickling down into every part of my life.”

Introducing #architect and spatial planner Sabuhi Essa – an #innovator shaping her field. Sabuhi, who is studying for a #PhD in Civil Engineering, has been featured in a new portrait series celebrating women scientist-entrepreneurs – see portrait above (and the image that inspired it – swipe left).

The Drawn to Lead exhibit, curated by Dr Ghina M Halabi, was unveiled during the 2025 EnterpriseWOMEN Showcase at the Cambridge Judge Business School.

The portrait of Sabuhi by scientist-artist Dr Tennie Videler shows her amid the Hunza Valley of #Pakistan, where she grew up, with #design in hand. The inclusion of three lions visible on the University’s Coat of Arms point to Sabuhi’s global journey and personal support system – namely her father, husband and brothers. “It’s a portrait of a woman building, not just buildings, but possibilities,” says Dr Videler, who used pen and ink to create the A3-sized.

Sabuhi said: “The portrait captures many things. Firstly, my drive to serve the mountain communities under the impacts of climate change, modernisation and rapid urbanisation; secondly, women’s empowerment in a field that is mainly male dominated (but with support from the men in my life: my father who gave me the vision, my two brothers who pushed and motivated me, and my husband, who has supported and guided me through this process); and thirdly, how and can help us build environments that are safe, resilient, and keep cultural identity intact.”

When you press your index finger against the microfibres, real-time #electrocardiogram (#ECG) signals are measured.

The researchers have demonstrated this function using a #robotic hand, a pencil and a plier tool. 🦾 ✍

In a real-life setting, a like the one shown here could become a companion for the elderly, periodically checking vital signs (ECG signals), without the use of wearable devices.

Household pliers and a pencil meanwhile, can become tools by which to measure both ECG and surface electromyography (sEMG) signals (i.e. force).

Read more about the research, which has been led by the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (GZ) and Queen Mary University of London.
