Whether you’re waiting for a ferry to your next destination or just visiting for the day, Puntarenas has more to offer than people give it credit for - hot, summer-y climate included.
Okay, I admit… a lot of it is food related. But listen - people in Puntarenas KNOW how to eat.
If you’re picking one dish? Go for seafood. Puntarenas is one of Costa Rica’s main fishing hubs, so it’s going to be some of the freshest you’ve had.
If you have time to wander, there’s cool Costa Rican history tucked between the shop-lined streets. Or go bigger - boat over to Isla Tortuga or Isla San Lucas (yes, the historic former prison island 👀).
And if you want something simple? Walk the boardwalk, grab a snack, hit the beach, and check out the historic pier - once part of the port system that helped move Costa Rican coffee from the Central Valley out to export ships.
Puntarenas is usually a pass-through town… but if you’ve got the time, it’s worth the stop.

This villa was just… ✨ The early morning sounds of nature, the wind, the way the sunlight glimmered through the floor to ceiling windows, plus the view you get to experience at all angles! This stay was a treat and I can’t wait to go back!

Some thoughts about it:
1) The roads getting there were DUSTY - I couldn’t imagine how muddy it would be in the rainy season, but I will take the dust and beautiful dappled sunlight
2) The sunsets were amazing
3) Tons of cows! We love cows 🐮
4) Things seem more spaced out in comparison to other areas in Costa Rica
5) Wellness IS a vibe here - we got to see the farmers market and try out a popular local spot, things seem to be more health oriented - people walking around with yoga gear, we saw a tennis court, heck, I even saw a pretty nice skatepark
6) The beaches are very nice! I’ll share videos and photos sooner than later!
7) People get around in tuktuks and ATVs, I didn’t expect to see tuktuks leaving dust trails whizzing down rural roads, lol.

1. Rent: ours is really fair in comparison to most rentals now, usually you are looking at $600+, especially in more vibrant areas of Costa Rica
2. Groceries: food is not cheap here, a pound of decent coffee is $20+. If you buy mostly local foods and go to *certain* farmers markets, you can get more bang for your buck
3. Bills: we pay electricity and phones - some rentals come with internet and paid water - however electricity costs are constantly rising and its quality is pretty scattered (we get a lot of power surges and frequent outages), so this may result in spending more on backup equipment or more frequently damaged electronic goods
4. Car/transportation: we have a sedan style car, from 2011, so the insurance is considerably low ($20/month) but gas is very expensive in Costa Rica (usually around $1.30/litre). This number also doesn’t account for mechanic work and weekly car washes to prevent salt and humidity damage
5. Dining: this is for the nights or afternoons that we are too busy or tired from wrestling a toddler to cook, we also enjoy pizza every now and then 🍕
