I didn’t say anything at the time because I had to keep functioning and get through training, and because I genuinely could not make myself accept that she was gone and saying it out loud made it real.
I’ve had her longer than I haven’t had her. I barely remember life before that weird little white dog was attached to my side.
She was oddly proportioned, usually had one of my terrible haircuts, and still carried herself like she was the most important thing in the room. She never needed a leash because she never wanted to be anywhere except next to me anyway. Everyone who knew me knew her too.
Coming home without her here has been devastating in these quiet little ways I wasn’t prepared for. Seeing her little bed still there. Walking into my apartment and realizing how empty it feels without hearing her little footsteps behind me. Catching myself looking for her automatically and reaching for her when I wake up in the morning.
Posting has always kind of been my version of journaling. I document everything without really thinking about it, and looking back at my posts is basically how I remember different parts of my life and honestly, Coconut was probably in 70% of it.
In the background of videos, asleep in the passenger seat, wearing some ridiculous outfit I put her in, sitting next to me while I studied at coffee shops and airports, following me around my apartment, matching sweaters my mom knitted for us, random blurry photos because I thought she looked cute doing absolutely nothing.
I think what hurts the most is knowing there will someday be more years of my life without her than with her.
Right now that feels impossible to even understand.
I never knew what a soul dog was until I met her and I miss her every second.
