Some careers are chosen… others are quietly shaped over a lifetime. In this inspiring episode of Beyond the Design, host Cray Bauxmont-Flynn welcomes Susan Weiss of Emerson Bailey -, a visionary whose extraordinary talent for curation, storytelling, and refined living has been shaped by a lifetime immersed in the world of design.
For Susan, design was never simply an industry—it was a way of life. Growing up alongside her father, renowned architect and collector Harold Bailey, she was surrounded by a world where craftsmanship, architecture, antiques, and meaningful objects were not merely admired, but deeply understood. What she describes as an “intravenous” education in design became the foundation of a remarkable creative journey.
In this thoughtful conversation, Susan reflects on how her father’s philosophy of collecting—valuing the stories, people, and experiences behind each piece rather than simple ownership—profoundly shaped her perspective. That philosophy would later guide her into the world of luxury curation, helping shape major platforms such as Net-a-Porter’s furniture and home divisions, and ultimately leading to her influential work with Emerson Bailey.
Susan’s extraordinary talent lies in her ability to bridge history, architecture, and interiors, viewing every object not simply as décor, but as living history carrying craftsmanship, memory, and narrative. Her perspective reminds us that the most meaningful spaces are not assembled overnight—they are thoughtfully collected and deeply personal.
Through her engaging discussion with Cray, Susan shares the importance of honoring creative lineage while forging your own path, proving that great design is often rooted in observation, curiosity, and a profound appreciation for beauty with purpose.

What I quickly learned is that these are incredibly rare. Authentic examples from the 17th and 18th centuries are nearly impossible to come across, especially outside of France where they traditionally originated in regions like Burgundy and the Loire Valley. I searched for many years, until finally, I found this extraordinary set in a private estate.
These hand-carved limestone sculptures were originally created between 1650–1780 from Pierre de Bourgogne, the same limestone used in grand French cathedrals and estates. Their purpose was apotropaic, meant to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. According to folklore, the jagged star-like protrusions were designed to snag the cloaks of witches flying past, preventing them from entering the property.
Beyond their folklore, they also carry deep symbolic meaning. Their geometric precision has ties to 18th-century Freemasonry, representing transformation, refinement, and protection. Smaller versions were even kept under beds to prevent nightmares or in stables to protect livestock. Every angle and carve tells a story centuries old.

“Applied to her contemporary interior designs, founder Susan Weiss’s well-tuned eye for global antiques and vintage treasures helps craft layered homes that marry function, aesthetic, and storytelling.”
