Just the cutest little glass measuring jug 😍

I’m busy dyeing Pendle Sport as we speak. Pendle 4ply and Aran are done and waiting to be processed too. Yay!!

Today's jumper of the day is actually a cardigan for a change, and it's Beyond by Hannah Gough, made in my Keld Aran (superwash merino/linen). It was my second ever crocheted garment I think and I was - and still am - chuffed to bits with how it came out! I especially love the button band.

The buttons are from Textile Garden, as is most of my button jar stash!

I know wearing a green top with green pants isn't the most stylish choice but these are my winter walking trousers (thermal and windproof - got them in the sale from Mountain Warehouse) and I'm wearing them for work because it saves me getting changed before tonight's dog walk 😅

Oh and yes I'm wearing the same merino base layers that I was yesterday. Wool doesn't get funky as quickly and easily as cotton and synthetic fibres can do and I'm not exactly working up a sweat or even going near anyone other than Dave 🤣

With lots of new followers here I thought I should probably do a brief intro post for those who don't know my story. It's a long one so I'll try and summarise!
I'm Victoria, I'm 40, and back in 2011 I escaped some shitty life stuff in Manchester and moved to a run down cottage in the Eden Valley in Cumbria, destitute. I'd been selling a bit of hand dyed yarn on Etsy as Wild Fire Fibres (this feels like a lifetime ago!) and always wanted to go self employed so with no dependents, just me and a load of debt, I gave it a go. I set up the website using the computer at the library in the nearest town (Appleby) and hand dyed yarn on the Rayburn range in the cottage. With no central heating and about a tenner a week to live on it for the first few months (over winter!) it was a horrible couple of winters tbh. But it took off big time, I got internet installed, then met my other half Dave online, and then moved to Leeds (Yeadon) with him. Then we moved to Wetherby which is where we are now. I had three staff for about six years but Brexit took its toll (I used to sell a lot to Europe) and I had to let two of them go, so now it's just me and Claire who works part time. I adore my job, I'm happy with the size of the business now (it's far more manageable!), and that's about it!

Why hand dyed yarn? Well whilst I was at Dundee trying and failing to do an architecture degree I taught myself to knit and crochet, and hand a go at dyeing because I couldn't find nice colours of nice yarn nearby. The rest is history! My aim was always to create nice colours inspired by nature - at the time I couldn't find much in the way of semi-solids in muted tones (which seems unbelievable now!!). So that has stuck, and I still have quite a lot of colourways that I've been dyeing this whole time, and still sell well (Driftwood, Rambling Rose, Pennine Mist, to name a few).

When I'm not working I'm usually found dogwalking, hiking, running, at the gym, reading, knitting, or crocheting. I haven't even mentioned my struggles with my ancient back injury and PCOS!

So there you go, a potted history of ECY! I'm so bloody grateful to still be going after almost 15 years 🤯

Today's jumper of the day is one that long time followers will have seen many times before: The Weekender by Andrea Mowry, made in Bowland Aran (100% BFL). It's a real wardrobe staple for me.

If you fancy one too I've got a variety of hand dyed aran yarn batches in stock!

The combination of this plus two merino layers underneath is working really well for me in today's frosty temperatures - I've got a short sleeved one on underneath the long sleeved polo neck.

I finally got pics of a lap blanket I made late last year! It's been sat on the kitchen table waiting for ages 🤦

The pattern is the classic Neat Ripple Blanket by Lucy of Attic24.
The yarn is Milburn DK (superwash BFL/silk) by me:)

The colours are: Charcoal, Compost, Wicker, Harvest Gold, Rain, Catmint, Thyme, Natural, and Estuary (2 x 50g balls of each). Do you think I should put a yarn pack together for it? I obviously can't provide the pattern or any pattern support, but I know it can be hard to put colours together online so this might help.

Today's jumper of the day is my beautiful and much-loved Blossom by Along Avec Anna, made in my own hand dyed yarn - Keld Aran. It's a blend of superwash merino and linen which is why you can see the beautiful gentle flecks of white in it - that's the linen which hasn't taken the dye. You can't feel it so it just gives it a gently rustic appearance (IMO!).

I've got aran yarn for sale if you fancy making one of these - there's an Aran Yarn section on the website where you can see it all together, and there's a page for each type too. In stock I have: Brimham Aran (superwash extrafine merino/nylon - v squishy); Bowland Aran (100% superwash BFL - woolly and a bit sheepy in a good way); and Keld Aran (there are two colours left, only one of which is probably enough to make a jumper - sorry!). The Keld is on sale, and the other two are relatively cheap.

I keep my aran yarns at the lowest possible price that I can do compared to my bases because I know you'll need quite a lot to make a jumper and that's its primary use. It's a risky strategy because I need the profit on the yarn to pay for all my overheads (not to mention more yarn!), but there we go! That's the benefit of buying from a small business - we can choose to do things like this:)

PS. I've also got Pendle Aran (100% superwash extrafine merino) in the dye pots as we speak - in batches of ten x 100g skeins.

Morning, folks! It’s gone weirdly mild here this morning, at 8°c it feels positively balmy 😅

I’m sure there’ll be plenty more wintry weather to come yet though, so… here’s a reminder that I’ve got these beautiful wintry shades of Pendle Chunky (100% superwash extrafine merino) in stock. One skein makes a cosy hat, cowl, or mittens. 😍

Plus the January sale is still on and there’s still lots to choose from that’s discounted. I just love having a massive clearout at the beginning of the year, it’s so satisfying!

A few pics from this morning’s dogwalk here in Yorkshire 😍

We’ve both had the lurgy for the past two weeks so haven’t been walking much; plus during the week we’re mostly dogwalking in the dark after work over winter. I’m also injured at the moment and not able to run. So it was great to be able to get out on such a beautiful sunny, frosty day. 😍😍😍

Yesterday’s jumper of the day (which I have been wearing all week until today actually) was my Carbeth by Kate Davies, made in Whitfell Chunky (100% baby alpaca!).

It’s longer than the pattern states and because my shape has changed in the years since I made it it’s got even longer. So it looks a bit dress-like now but I’ve decided to leave it as it is seeing as it’s so warm. I also made the cowl neck much deeper so it’s all cosy. It’s ideal when it’s below freezing and the windchill is much lower!

Underneath I’m wearing my Alpkit merino base layers which I also use for running and hiking. I have a short sleeved one on and a long sleeved one on too. The short sleeved one is a men’s one as it’s longer in the arms and body. So with those three layers on I have to say I am toasty warm!

I’ve got thermal windproof walking trousers from Mountain Warehouse on too, and then sheepskin boots on my feet. My feet don’t do warm so it’s just a case of keeping them as comfortable as possible.

Hooray for wool eh! (And baby alpaca)

Thankyou for all the January Clear Out Sale orders! It's really fun seeing what you order as there have been lots of very varied choices - I'm guessing trying out new bases or stocking up on colours.

There were a number of stock issues (so annoying!), I strongly suspect due to the Shopify app not saving changes when I've made them, despite always hitting Save. Anyway today I have done a stock take on all my hand dyed yarn so it should all be present and correct now.

Although the sale is going well there are still currently 75 listings of skeins that are discounted (and in stock), so there is still plenty to choose from and if you haven't looked at it yet you haven't missed out.

This yarn is Keld Fingering in Diascia, and it's now the only Keld Fingering left! Don't worry, I will be stocking up on all of these yarns again this year:)
