Finally my school physics has came into its own - I remembered that hot air rises.
So I opened the loft window to allow all the hot air out. Left it open to create a up draught. And, of course, left the loft hatch open too, Works wonders.
Just watch out for any rain and make sure it’s not coming into the loft.

Short term savings:
🏡 Open all your windows a couple of times a day to reduce condensation and cut energy bills (wet air is really tough to heat)
🏡 Use cleaning products that are cheap, natural and work, without putting toxins into your home. ( go find -she’s the guru)
🏡 Find the draughts in your home and block them up to stay warm (windows, doors, between floor
Long terms savings:

I know it sounds daft - but insulation can keep us warm in winter, cool in summer and dry year round

The measure is Decrement Delay - how long it takes for the heat outside to be replicated in your home. So if it’s a 35 degree day, how long before it’s 35 degrees in your home.
😎 synthetic insulation 2.5 hours
😎 hemp insulation 11 hours
😎 wood fibre 15 hours
Natural insulation v air con. I know which one I’d go for.

😎Put ice in front of your fan. It will cool down the air, rather than just move the warm air around
😎 Sleep as low down in your home as you can. Hot air rises, so bedrooms will always be the hottest by the end of the day.
😎 Put your feet in cold water before you go to bed. That drains the heat from your head as your blood works to warm up your feet. And hopefully you’ll drop off easily.

If you want to know more about making your home warm in winter, cool in summer and chapter to run comment Book and I’ll send you a link to What the Builder Won’t Tell You. It’s the book I needed when we were working on our eco home. It didn’t exist then, so I wrote it.
I renovated my 1901 Victorian terrace, saving 75% of our energy usage. And we’re more comfortable than we’ve ever been!
Here we go:
🏡 Old houses can be really warm and cosy - don’t let anyone tell you otherwise
🏡 Modern, synthetic building materials cause condensation - made from plastic they doesn’t manage moisture well
🏡 The builder isn’t always right - they’re probably not up to date with what old houses need, especially when it comes to materials.
🏡 Natural building materials keep you warm in winter AND cool in summer. And no toxins off gassing into your home
🏡 It will take longer than you expect and cost more, so factor that in. It’s all about managing your expectations and your energy. Old houses are individual and full of surprises - that’s why we love them

It’s daunting - I know. We turned our Victorian house into an eco home. Now we pay nothing for energy and we’re more comfortable than we’ve ever been. But it was hair-raising as it went along.
We all worry:
👷♂️ will they turn up when they said they would?
👷♂️ will they turn up at all?
👷♂️ do they really know what they’re doing?
👷♂️ will it cost what they say it will cost?
👷♂️ will we end up with the home we need?
The trick is to understand enough about the process so you can ask the right questions and have the conversations you need to ensure you get what you want.

And if you want to know more about builders, contracts, insurance, architects, materials - all the different elements of a house renovation - comment BOOK and I’ll send you a link to What the Builder Won’t Tell You. It’s the book I needed when we were working on our home. All in plain English, easy to read and full of stories about my experience. You’re welcome!
👷 How to find a builder you can trust? How many estimates should you ask for and what if they don’t respond? It’s not so bad when you understand the process and how to check on quality and reliability.
👷 You have to get a contract if you want to stay safe from cowboy builders, shoddy work or late finishes. But there are people out there who can help you.
👷 Money feels like a minefield. How costing works, when you need to pay and how? It can be straightforward, you just have to make sure you’re caught out without the right money to hand
👷 As a homeowner it’s hard to work out who actually needs to be involved. Like when you need a structural engineer? Who gets the building inspector in. And whether you really need an architect? Once you know what they all do it makes a lot more sense.
👷Will the builder understand about insulation and what will keep you cool in summer as well as warm in winter? Do they know all that’s available or will they just want to use what they know?
I wrote What the Builder Won’t Tell You to answer exactly these sorts of questions - and loads more. Using my own experience and spending hours picking the brains of the professionals, this is my view of what builders don’t know or don’t think to say.
From one homeowner to another - in plain English. You are very welcome!
What the Builder Won’t Tell You. On Amazon or to order in bookshops
It happened to me when retrofitting and saving 75% of energy usage in an old Victorian terrace. The implications of that are enormous - saving money on bills, being more comfortable, increasing the value of the biggest investment most of us ever make and helping this struggling planet.
So I decided to share what I’d learned, so we can all benefit. Since then I’ve:
🏡 Learned loads about retrofit and the best materials to use
🏡 Met some fascinating people
🏡 Got onto social media and become InstaGran to my family
🏡 Written blogs and a book
🏡 Given talks for anyone who asks me
Then recently I discovered that most builders know next to nothing about all this. So I just had to tell you. Then you can tell the builder what you need rather than just accepting what you’re given.
There is so much to say, that meant another book. I got my head down in August and now it’s out - fully checked for accuracy and apostrophes - and ready to give you a helping hand.
What the Builder Won’t Tell You is on Amazon (link in bio) and can be ordered from bookshops.
You’re very welcome. Let me know if I can help in any way.
I want all you young and younger things to have a world to live in once I’ve popped my clogs.
The best way I know to help with that is to make your home energy efficient. You’ll be warm and cosy, save a shed load of money and cut your emissions all at the same time.
Follow along and let’s make a difference together
