Out of the 180 pieces of trash recorded during our July 31st Crater Lake Cleanup, over 70% was made of plastic.
This cleanup is part of the nationwide Plastic-Free Parks TrashBlitz initiative, where volunteers collect trash and log data in an effort to mitigate plastic pollution in our National Parks and other federally-owned lands.
💚 Our favorite part of the trip was the water refill station at the Steel Visitor Center that uses purified water from Annie Spring.
We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic pollution problem, but we can be the change we want to see. One way we can do this is by contributing to the #PlasticFreeParks campaign!

A study published in ScienceDirect conducted by the Department of Energy in 2019 shows that “of the estimated 44 Mt (metric tons) of plastic waste managed in 2019 domestically, approximately 86% was landfilled, 9% was combusted, and 5% was recycled. Landfilled plastics represented significant losses to the country’s economy in 2019: an average of US$7.2 billion in market value.”
An additional study conducted by Last Beach Cleanup and in 2021 showed around the same amount of plastic waste was actually recycled: Between 5 and 6%.
🤨Why is so little plastic getting recycled?
According to the Department of Energy’s study, it’s due to “low recycling rates, population growth, consumer preference for single-use plastics, and low disposal fees in certain parts of the country.”
The “chasing arrows” symbols on the bottom of plastic products are also misleading, as the symbol does not guarantee the product is recyclable.

Sharon Rowe, the visionary behind ECOBAGS, passed away early this year. Her unwavering dedication to sustainability and her kind, pioneering soul have left an indelible mark. Not only on our company, but also on the broader movement towards a greener, more environmentally conscious world.
From the very beginning she saw reusable, sustainably made bags not only as a practical way to fight single-use plastic, but as a catalyst for meaningful change. This belief inspired her to establish ECOBAGS over three decades ago in 1989 with a mission to provide eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic bags and beyond.
Under Sharon’s guidance, ECOBAGS has grown from a small grassroots initiative to a leading provider of truly sustainable goods. Her passion for sustainability, coupled with her entrepreneurial spirit, has guided our company to innovate and evolve, always staying true to our core values of “Do No Harm, Leave No Trace.”
Our tiny, tight-knit team welcomes Blake Rowe, Sharon’s husband, as our new CEO. Blake has always been involved and supporting behind the scenes with ECOBAGS since Sharon began her business. In tribute to Sharon’s legacy, we are committed to continuing her mission and advancing our efforts towards further sustainability. With this commitment in mind, we took action this year partnering with several organizations to help make this world a little greener (details in our blog).
With the loss of our guiding light and biggest advocate, we have been slowly picking up the pieces and directing our energies towards further sustainability initiatives within our company, as well as advocacy for both people and planet.
We invite you to join us on our journey in 2025 and beyond, where we aim to uplift, inspire, and educate more people on the power of reusables and individual action.
As Sharon liked to say: Be green.
Wishing you and yours the warmest and happiest of holidays,
💚The ECOBAGS Team
We’d like to emphasize that while this is fantastic progress, it’s also served to shine a light on various loopholes companies use to keep producing plastic.
The answer is NOT a thicker plastic bag that people throw out anyway, it’s offering reusables made from renewable, sustainable materials like cotton or hemp.
Going forward with this info in mind, we can shape these bans for the better.
