THE HIDDEN CRISIS ON CAMPUS...

Did you know that 53% of Tasmanian students are currently food insecure?

As the cost of living climbs, the anxiety around food availability is growing. But the Tasmanian University Student Association (TUSA) is digging deep. They're on a mission to provide a dignity-first solution to a statewide problem.

We’re spotlighting how TUSA is partnering with local producers and food relief organisations to ensure no student has to study hungry.

Tassie is at a crossroads. By choosing to shop at local Tassie shops and farms, you are helping to protect our food supply and keep our state moving forward.

We have the chance to build a food system no other state can claim: localized, chemical-free, and resilient for everyone. Many of us have the agency to choose where our dollars go - and those choices are critical for our State’s future.

While big-box convenience is easy, global supply chains are facing serious instability in fuel and #urea supplies. By supporting small-scale growers and independent retailers, we invest in a system that doesn't rely on long-haul logistics or synthetic-heavy farming.

How to take back your purchasing POWER:
✅ Farm Gates & Markets: Buying direct ensures 100% of your money stays with the producer.
✅Shop Small: Retailers like demystify wholefoods. Buy exactly what you need, value producers, and cut plastic.
✅ Independent Grocers: Local IGAs and prioritise Tassie growers, offering convenience with local heart.
✅ Crop Swap: Don’t let excess rot! Use local community pantries or
✅Ramp up the local: To our #TassieChefs & Owners
We challenge you to push your local procurement. Seek out smaller growers and seasonal gluts. We’re seeing this win at,,,,,, and Federal Hospitality venues and many more across the state.

We boast about having the best produce in the world. More than ever, it’s time we backed it!

With fuel hikes and rising food prices making every supermarket run feel a bit heavier, there has never been a better time to take a little control back. Even a few pots on a sunny balcony can help buffer your grocery budget.
Plant these three nutrient-dense favorites that are currently seeing price spikes but are surprisingly simple to grow:

1. Early "New" Potatoes (In Pots)
While a full crop of large roasting potatoes takes a long time, if you plant a "fast" variety (like Rocket or Swift) in a large pot or bag now and keep it in a sunny, sheltered spot, you can harvest "new" potatoes in about 80–90 days. These smaller, waxy potatoes are dense, starchy, and filling!

2. Cabbage
Forget the soggy boiled cabbage of the past, cabbage is making a come back! Freshly grown cabbage is crisp, sweet, and incredibly filling. By planting "mini" or "sugarloaf" varieties now, you can have dense, nutritious heads ready for the kitchen in under 90 days.

3. Broad Beans
April is the "sweet spot" for planting these. They are nitrogen-fixers (great for your soil) and a luxury item in stores, but they grow like weeds here. They are a fantastic source of protein and fiber.
Try them in a fresh Broad Bean and Mint Smash on sourdough.

Ever felt a little intimidated by a wholefoods store?

Ther's row upon row of unpackaged ingredients, we worry if we have the "right" jars or if we’ll know how to use the scales. But shopping at a local grocer like Unpacked in Kingston isn’t about being perfect; it’s just about good food and friendly faces.

We recently sat down with Josh from to talk about how they make wholefoods accessible for everyone—from families on a budget to retirees looking for just a pinch of spice.

Here’s the secret: You just need the list of ingredients for the meals you're cooking through the week.
- You can buy exactly the amount you need (no more half-used packets in the back of the cupboard!).
- You get to meet the people who know exactly which Tasmanian farm your veggies came from.
= It’s a slower, friendlier way to shop that supports our local growers.

Read our latest chat with Josh to see why your local grocer might just become your favorite place to shop: 👉 comment UNPACKED and we'll send the article directly to your inbox or view via the link in our bio.

Not in Kingston? No worries! Tassie is full of incredible independent grocers and wholefood shops that offer that same personal touch and local produce.

It takes an incredible amount of effort, passion and resources to bring food into Tasmanian homes. This story of production, alongside the current culture of consumption, presents an odd paradox: good food is being wasted at an alarming rate.

Tasmanian Food Is Too Good To Waste.

This International Day of Food Waste and Loss and we’re excited to launch Too Good To Waste, a NEW campaign to help Tasmanians reduce their food waste and #EatWell.

There are a lot of compelling and meaningful reasons to reduce our waste: The incentives of saved money, time and energy are obvious places to start. However, in exploring the connection between several Tasmanian chefs and producers we witnessed arguably a more sustaining and nourishing source of motivation—relationships.

In our NEW campaign, we explore the connection between chef and producer—their stories show us that reconnecting with our food systems and cultivating relationships with local food, presents as a wonderful and exciting place to ground our work in tackling the culture of waste.

Join us every Thursday as we release NEW episodes of our #2Good2Waste series—plus we’ll be sharing useful tips and delicious recipes to help you #SaveFood and.
