North American P-51D Mustang “Jane VI”
Presenters: Evan Fagen, Sabastien Domine, Bill Marshall
Honoring Lt. Col. Bert Marshall, Jr.

10 am

Built in December 1944, P-51D Mustang 44-72253 “Jane VI” arrived in England just as World War II entered its final months. Assigned to 355th Fighter Group Commander Lt. Col. Bert W. Marshall, Jr., the Mustang escorted B-17 bombers, strafed enemy targets, and helped secure Allied air superiority over Europe.

On March 31, 1945, Marshall and “Jane VI” were heavily damaged by anti-aircraft fire near Munich. Despite the crippled aircraft, Marshall flew more than two hours back to England, where he executed a flawless belly landing—his fourth of the war—saving both himself and his Mustang.

Repaired and returned to combat, the aircraft scored another aerial victory before the war ended. Rediscovered decades later, “Jane VI” remains one of the few authentic combat veterans of the 355th Fighter Group, honoring the courage and determination of the pilots who flew her into history.
