The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City has opened a new exhibition featuring a selection of works from its Department of Drawings and Prints. Titled 'Independence and Identity', the exhibition explores themes of autonomy in creative, social, and political contexts. These ideas emerge through both the subjects and the styles of the works on display, which range from depictions of individual laborers embodying self-reliance and personal agency, as seen in the typically Dutch drawings highlighted in this post, to eighteenth-century portraits of American leaders and twentieth-century modernist works by artists such as Joseph Vogel.
Located in Gallery 690 on the museum’s second floor, the exhibition is on view for a limited time. Because drawings are sensitive to light exposure, they can only be displayed temporarily before returning to storage. The current installation closes on October 6, giving visitors a four-month window to experience these rarely seen works, including the remarkable Dutch works featured here, before they once again disappear from public view.

This summer, Dutch artist Gabriel Lester transforms the historic Eugenia Williams House with 'Melancholia in Arcadia', a haunting installation where stiffened lace curtains appear caught in an invisible breeze, suspended somewhere between movement and stillness, presence and absence.
Originally created as a tribute to Lester’s friend, artist Huseyin Bahri Alptekin, the work draws on photographs of curtains billowing through open windows and the tradition of opening a window to release the soul of the departed. Set against sweeping views of the Tennessee River, Melancholia in Arcadia offers a powerful encounter with a space that feels at once familiar and otherworldly.

Derived from the Dutch holiday Pinksteren (Pentecost), Pinkster evolved into an important celebration for enslaved and free Black communities, who preserved and celebrated African cultural traditions through music, storytelling, dance, and community gatherings.
Head of Culture Pauline Genee joined the Pinkster celebrations, from the Pinkster Stroll and Lavada Nahon’s lecture on the history and significance of Pinkster to West African dance and live music. Pinkster reflects a unique shared history between the Netherlands, New York, and African American communities.
Thank you to Dyckman Farmhouse Museum for keeping this important history alive.

🖌️In a new series of wall paintings, canvases, and drawings, Lily van der Stokker explores the idea of “male art,” turning the phrase into a sharp and playful reflection on gender, power, and hierarchy in the art world and beyond. Through references to iconic male artists and historically “masculine” artworks, van der Stokker challenges assumptions around visibility, recognition, and inclusivity with her signature wit and bold visual language.
