The moments I look in her eyes and she breaks out in a smile are almost indescribable in how wonderful they feel to my heart. They’re easily always in the top 2 moments of every day. Nobody makes her smile more than her brother, her grandma, and meeting new people. But there’s also a very unique twinkle in her eye when she smiles at me that I don’t think will ever fail to lift my spirit with joy and love and gratitude.

I can’t believe how lucky I am to have the privilege of being Eva’s dad. She brings so much joy to me and everyone around her, she still makes me laugh, and I love talking to her about everything from sports to music to seeing angels. My day gets better every time she smiles and I’m so grateful I get to do life with her every day.
On to the mood swings and eye rolls and all the other fun things about having a teenager!

One of my favorite things of all time is playing baseball with Eva. Not only have I loved the sport since I can remember (Go Cubs Go!), but the ability to be out not he field with her while we hit, run/roll, and field is an enormous source of joy for me. And for her! Aside from being in a pool and her shaky vest, baseball is definitely one of her favorite activities! Huge shout out to Miracle League for an incredible experience every week!
It’s been a fantastic summer for Eva. After 5 years of surgeries, procedures, and operations, her body seems to be in a place of balance and stability, which makes her baseline a place where she is alert, engaged, responsive, and with the ability to experience so much joy. She gets to experience music, movies, and her shows, going for walks, baseball, swimming, and so much more.
The best part of my days is always when I get to see Eva smile, which she’s doing more and more. In fact, something new she’s been doing lately is giving me a gorgeous smile almost every time I tell say: “I love you.” Check out the video and try not to smile yourself!
So much more to come but the fact that Eva Love is happy and stable makes every day a day of so many possibilities for joy and healing!
It’s also been a wonderful summer him. He has a fierce love and devotion to his friends and since starting 3rd grade, he made a fast friend who has become his new bestie. But whether it’s his oldest friend, a new friend, a neighbor, or someone he just met, he has a strong heart to connect and imagine and love. Special shout out to Phoenix’s newest obsession, which is the VR game Gorilla Tag!
At the beginning of summer on a Saturday, Linds suggested that Phoenix and I go do something random and fun. We went to an arcade, got McDonalds, and played with all the toys he got with the billion tickets we won. After we got home, Phoenix said he had so much fun and if we could do it again on the next Saturday. I told him of course and thus established what we’ve come to call: “Super Saturday.” Every week he and I load up in the car and head out to do something random. Sometimes it’s a simple and getting a happy meal or a new stuffy, other times it’s a little more elaborate. On one of our more elaborate trips, we spent a Saturday at Six Flags Great America! I’d been there a dozen times as a kid and it was such a blast to spend the day with my boy getting sunburned, waiting in lines, screaming our lungs out, and paying so much money for a Coke Zero.
It’s been a really beautiful season of connecting with Phoenix as he approaches turning 9. He’s not only the best son, but he is the more incredible brother to Eva. He always wants to include her in everything, spends time watching shows with her, talks to her, listens to her, and the smile Eva gives him is like no other smile she gives for anyone else.
He’s growing about an inch a week, so I’m trying my best to be intentional with connecting with him in his world and his interests and his passions before he’s old enough that he doesn’t want to spend as much time with me (or at least has to pretend to not want to…)!
