Today, the Fashion & Textile Museum in London opens the Ossie Clark & Celia Birtwell exhibition. This image and a write-up can be found in the culture section of The Guardian's website. Celia Birtwell designed the fabric for the trousers suits, which were photographed for The Telegraph magazine, September 1973 issue. Inside the museum, you can find the Jane Asher image in a display wearing the ‘paper bag dress’ designed by Ossie Clark, made from printed paper fabric designed by Celia Birtwell; published in the September 1966 Nova magazine

Paris fashion week is in full swing! To celebrate we pulled out some exceptional shots from the during his time working with

Duffy began shooting for the magazine in Paris under the direction of director Peter Knapp in 1962. By 1965, he preferred the creative atmosphere at Elle so much that he shifted much of his focus away from some British rivals. He remained with the publication until 1979, the year he decided to retire from photography.

This extensive collaboration has produced some iconic time capsule moments.

Duffy’s photographs were at the forefront, metaphorically and literally covering magazines, displaying fashion culture and landscapes between the 1960s and late 70s. Much has changed looking at todays photography, cameras being so accessible mean that we can live vicariously through those within the fashion scene. When Duffy was shooting these moments, this access simply did not exist. Fashion was becoming an increasingly powerful form of youth and cultural expression, but the public’s view into this world was largely composed by the photographers. Fashion photography was not simply about showing clothes, but about capturing a new way of living, dressing and being seen. The images helped to define the visual language of the decades.

Angie Bowie celebrates her birthday today. This photo was shot by Duffy in 1973, the year Aladdin Sane was released. Angie’s drive & enthusiasm for the outrageous were significant contributions to David Bowie's image. Hairdresser Suzy Fussey (later Mick Ronson’s wife) coloured his hair orange. The northern lads - Spiders from Mars - she cajoled into wearing makeup, platform boots & glitzy clothing. She focused her energies on making David’s unique talent as spectacular & flamboyant as possible and influencing the era of Glam Rock. angiebowie1

This weekend, we had the pleasure of seeing x Bowie come to life at Lightroom, an immersive live performance inspired by David Bowie’s Berlin years, and the Berlin Trilogy.

At Metazoan, it was especially meaningful to see the work of The Duffy Archive, whom we proudly represent, take such a prominent role within the experience.

The image, the music and the scale of the experience came together beautifully.

We’re proud to represent and to have Duffy’s work contribute to such a considered celebration of Bowie’s legacy.

“Waiting for the gift of sound and vision…”

This weekend, we got both.

VISION

Duffy’s five photographic sessions with Bowie produced some of the most recognisable images of Bowie’s career, but also a wealth of rarely seen work that continues to reveal new sides of their creative relationship.

Among the most striking moments of the evening was the presentation of the rarely seen, remastered inversion of Duffy’s Aladdin Sane album cover, the black-and-white negative.

To see this edition of such a recognisable moment displayed larger than life was amazingly impressive, and to have opened the experience truly established the visual narrative.

SOUND

Gregson’s take blended electronic and ambient textures to create landscapes that were extrinsic, transporting the audience into the atmosphere of Bowie’s Berlin years.

The soundscape moved between tension, emotion and experimentation, reflecting the complexity of Bowie’s work during this transformative period and creating a new way to experience the music beyond the original recordings.

The result was an immersive meeting of sound and vision, where Gregson’s interpretation and Duffy’s photography worked together to create something entirely new.
The September issue of Vogue is always the highlight of the Vogue publishing year. While Duffy did not photograph the distinctive September 1961 cover, he did shoot a six-page editorial feature in Florence. The identified models are Marie-Lise Gres and Celia Hammond, both wearing incredibly chic clothing.
