The journey finally comes to an end: I have finished my breast surgical oncology fellowship, concluding 10 years of post graduate training to become a breast cancer surgeon! Fellowship while becoming a mom was no easy feat, so while I didn’t share my life in photos in real time, please enjoy this little highlight photo album.

I’ve been reflecting on this past year a lot this week, all the good and bad:
Starting fellowship in my third trimester of pregnancy.
Kicking off the year having so much fun with the best co-fellow ever.
Jumping into the steepest learning curve presenting tumor board for the first time.
Doing my first entirely solo mastectomy.
Holding my co-fellow’s hand when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
Continuing on in fellowship alone while she went through treatment, while very pregnant.
Learning from some of the greatest doctors in breast oncology.
Presenting tumor board while in early labor.
Coming back to work full time when my sweet daughter was 7 weeks old.
Starting to master the surgeries we do after high reps.
Balancing fellowship and mom life with extreme exhaustion.
Becoming part of countless women’s journeys through breast cancer.
Celebrating my co-fellow’s joyous return to fellowship.
Traveling with my little family to conferences and befriending many amazing other breast surgeons.
Cheering with patients who I treated who are now cancer free.
Finally- coming to the end of a long but rewarding year.

And now, I can finally say, after a decade of training, of grit, hard work, and God’s grace- I am a breast surgical oncologist! I’m so grateful for my chance to train here at Brown with some legendary surgeons.

I can’t wait for the next phase of life, learning to be an attending surgeon and taking care of women with breast cancer, but more importantly becoming a better wife & mom every day for the family I love.
On October 20th, our world changed forever 💕 I love being your mama, sweet girl 🥰🥹
Two whole months of fellowship down already, and only one week left hopefully until my baby girl’s arrival!!

I fully intended to post about starting my breast surgery fellowship right away, but the first couple months brought a lot of busy days and unexpected changes for both myself and the program. My sweet co fellow was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and it has been an emotional journey watching someone so dear to me go through diagnosis, surgery, postop care, and now preparing to undergo chemo. Our attendings have been more than supportive, but obviously dropping 1 of 2 fellows in the program brought some challenges to navigate. I have been blessed enough to have a fairly breezy third trimester up until about 2 weeks ago (just feeling very stuffed now😂) and have had no issues meeting the demands of fellowship. It’s been a privilege to be able to scrub many surgeries the last couple of months, and I have learned so much already about breast cancer surgery and care. I am honored to be a breast cancer surgeon 🩷

As October is breast cancer awareness month, I also want to remind everyone that early diagnosis is key to successful treatment of breast cancer. Please encourage your family, friends, and patients to get their screening mammograms at age 40!! If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, consider meeting with your physician to discuss if you are elevated risk and need additional or early screening.
General surgery residency, officially completed! 5 years of blood, sweat, and tears to become a surgeon. Maybe soon I will write something more reflective, but for now, I am OVERJOYED and celebrating!
when the friendship made it out of the DM 💕

social media has its ups and downs for sure but some of the people I’ve met though it make it all worth it. Case in point: I followed her through her journey in med school and when we realized we both matched gen surg in Chicago we messaged about meeting up but then COVID came our intern year.

Finally, one fateful day, she replied to my insta story about being single but having no effort to leave my apartment (pic #3) and next thing you know we’re on a boat (pic #2). And next, next thing you know she’s graduating and off to absolutely kill it at Brown as a breast surgery fellow.

So while I didn’t end up meeting my bf through her, cue some cheese, I got something way better! a lifelong badass surgeon friend and colleague. Going to miss you Tiff!! Can’t wait to follow your journey and meet baby girl once you come back to visit!
Entering my surgeon mom era this year! Baby girl coming this fall 💖🎀

It’s been a crazy year for me full of loss, surgeries, tears, heartache, and now hope. I wish that I wasn’t part of the 25% of female physicians who experience infertility or infant loss, but I am. If you find yourself on a similar journey, please know that I am here for you 🤍

It’s been 2 weeks since I matched into my breast surgical oncology fellowship, but it still feels so surreal! I cannot believe that after 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school, and 4.1 years of surgical residency, I have finally locked in the final step to become a breast surgeon. It feels incredible to know that all the years of grinding to succeed (despite being a D.O. who was told I’d never make it in surgery) have paid off to earn my fellowship spot at Brown. There were some dark days where I truly almost quit- but God gave me strength and the BEST support system to help me through. I couldn’t have done it without the love & encouragement of my husband, family, friends, and all of you. Thanks to you all for being such big cheerleaders for me as I have publicly shared this journey. I hope to continue to help those coming behind me on their journeys too 🤍

Italy was a dream. So grateful for a beautiful week of vacation with my husband and our close friends to close out my PGY4 year! I already can’t wait to go back for more aperol spritzes, cacio e pepe, dreamy views, and beautiful history. 10/10 recommend 🇮🇹

So, you’re a medical (or PA!) student and want to know how to excel on your surgery rotation? Well, as someone who did 32 weeks of surgical rotations in medical school and has had PA and med students working with me for 4 years now, I have some tips for you!

Set expectations early with your attending or resident in regards to prerounding, notes, and rounds so you have a plan for when to see patients.

Know everything about your patients from chart review- but give a focused and organized h&p on rounds.

Be prepared with supplies for rounds if you know there are dressing changes, drain removals, or suture removals.

Offer your help with anticipated tasks- seeing consults, postop checks, diet checks, etc.

In the OR, prep for your cases. Know the reason for the surgery, basic anatomy, and anticipated surgical steps. Ask the surgeon how you should participate in the case.

OR etiquette is important. Be kind and helpful to the nurse, scrub tech, and anesthesia team. Ask what tasks you can help with, ask if you don’t know how do you something, and jump in with heavy lifting!

For scrubbing in- if it’s your first time, tell EVERYONE! They will be helpful and patient if they know that it’s your first time. Get your sterile gown and gloves for the scrub tech, but ALWAYS ask before opening anything onto the sterile field. Don’t ever touch the Mayo stand or back table while scrubbed in.

Any questions? Good luck to all on your rotations!!
