This was an 8-week quintuplet pregnancy following ovulation induction.
Continuing with all five babies carried significant risks, especially extreme prematurity and complications associated with a very high-order multiple pregnancy.
After detailed counselling about the risks and available options, the parents decided to proceed with fetal reduction.
Under continuous ultrasound guidance, two fetuses were selectively reduced, taking the pregnancy from 5 babies to 3.
The purpose was not simply to reduce the number of babies.
It was to reduce pregnancy-related risks and improve the chances for the remaining babies.
