Too many athletes and triathletes around me chase targets, timings and podium, and I am no different most times but days like today teach me to be grateful for the biggest gift: love of my family and team and the chance to train and be at the start line.
I will do better but for now I just want to soak into this happiness and just be grateful!

After finishing my UG and PG in Bhopal, I started working in a government medical college as a lecturer. It was then that a trip to CMC Vellore for an emergency obstetric course changed my life forever. There I saw the sprawling possibilities of reproductive medicine- IVF, laparoscopy, robotic surgeries! After this experience, I was determined to study in CMC.
This led me, months later, on a 36-hour train ride to Vellore to write a fellowship entrance exam, only to rush back the same day to be with my one-year-old son. The next day itself, a phone call came from CMC informing me that I got in!
In the course of my career, the one patient who unknowingly altered the course of my life, about five years ago, was a young lady in despair, who after failing two cycles of IVF, on hearing my advice that she must have the stamina to try again, looked at me through tear-stained eyes and said, ‘It is easy for you to say I must have endurance; you are not the one failing IVF.’
That was the day I realized I ask so much from my patients, do I have in me the same strength that I ask of them every day?
This led to my decision to train for the Ironman Triathlon for the past five years. This challenge I set for myself required me to push beyond my absolute limits and face my biggest fears. I was absolutely terrified of water, usually sticking to the edges of shallow ends of pools my whole life, but the first leg of the Triathlon was an open water swimming race. I still consider overcoming my fear of water, learning to swim, and finishing the swim at the Kazakhstan Ironman on time as my biggest success!
