For many families, this isn’t a hypothetical situation — it’s reality.

Dr. James McKenna has spent decades studying mother-infant sleep. One of his most important messages isn’t that every family should bedshare. It’s that exhausted parents deserve realistic education. 🙌🏼

Because many parents who never planned to bedshare end up falling asleep while feeding their baby.

And falling asleep accidentally on a couch, recliner, or unsafe sleep surface can be far more dangerous than a planned, informed approach.

As a mom, I’ve been there. 🫩

The 3 a.m. feed.

The baby who wants to nurse all night.

The exhaustion that makes it hard to keep your eyes open. 😣

The fear of doing the wrong thing. 🥺

Before experiencing it myself, I thought safe sleep conversations were simple. 🫠

Then I became a mom.

And I realized that many of the decisions parents make happen in the middle of the night, running on very little sleep, while trying their best. 😩

That’s why I appreciate Dr. James McKenna’s approach.

Many parents will become so exhausted that staying awake during feeds becomes difficult. Families deserve practical, evidence-based information that helps them navigate those moments as safely as possible. 🫶🏻

We can talk about safe sleep while also talking honestly about parental exhaustion.

Both conversations matter.

As moms, lactation consultants, and sleep educators, we’re not here to judge your choices. We’re here to guide you, help you understand your options, and share evidence-based resources so you can make informed decisions that work for your family. 🥰

💛 No judgment. Just education, support, and realistic discussions about life with a newborn. Booking link in bio 🔗

Cluster feeding… It can feel endless, but it’s temporary — and it has a purpose. 💛

Worried your milk supply is dropping? 👀

Before you panic, take a closer look.

Around the time your milk supply regulates, it’s common to notice:

✨ Softer breasts
✨ Less leaking
✨ Fewer feelings of fullness
✨ Shorter feeds

These changes don’t automatically mean you’re making less milk. In many cases, your body is simply becoming more efficient and matching production to your baby’s needs.

The best indicators of adequate intake are:

✔️ Good diaper output
✔️ Steady weight gain
✔️ A baby who is feeding actively and effectively

If you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing is normal, we are here to help. 💛

Save this post for the next time supply worries creep in, and share it with a parent who needs the reminder. 🫶🏻

As a doctor and a mom, I already know that breast milk is extraordinary — uniquely designed to meet our babies’ needs in real time. 💛
So being able to actually take a closer look at it felt incredibly fascinating. 🤩
I used the Foundations Test Kit from LactoLabs to analyze a sample of my breast milk, and the process was super simple.

And I want to say this very clearly:
This is NOT about questioning he value of breast milk. Breast milk is already the gold standard for infant nutrition. For me, it was simply curiosity and getting a glimpse into the biology behind something our bodies are already doing every single day for our babies.

Receiving my report was a helpful reminder to prioritize my own nutrition as a mom — including increasing my protein intake and starting DHA supplementation.

Save this if you’re curious about the science of breast milk. 🤩
Or share it with another mom who loves learning what’s happening behind the scenes. 💜
If your baby only wants to be held, this is your reminder that closeness is not a bad habit ❤️

Babies are meant to seek connection, regulation, warmth, and safety through us.

And sometimes motherhood gently forces us to slow our pace in a world that constantly tells us to do more.

One day they’ll run off on their own.
But today, they just want US. 💛

Maybe you are, like I am, the person always doing more.
Always rushing.
Always productive.

Your baby is your reminder to slow down 🥰
Tummy time is about so much more than preventing flat spots or reaching milestones 👶

Daily tummy time helps babies develop the strength, coordination, and postural control they use during breastfeeding — especially comfort in midline positioning and gentle extension through the neck and upper body 💛

The best part? It starts from day one.

✨ Newborn tummy time ideas:
• skin-to-skin on parent’s chest
• reclined cuddles

✨ As baby grows:
• short floor sessions
• engaging face-to-face play
• babywearing with opportunities for active head lifting

Remember: tummy time doesn’t have to happen all at once. Small moments throughout the day count too 💛
Waking through the night is not a bad habit — it’s one of the most biologically normal things babies do. 🌙🤍

Night feeds play a powerful role in maintaining milk supply, regulating hormones, supporting growth, and keeping your baby close when they need you most. Your body was designed to respond to those nighttime cues — that’s not ‘creating dependency,’ that’s biology.

In a world quick to pathologize normal infant behaviour, remember: responding to your baby is never wrong. ✨

Every family will find the rhythm that works best for them, but if your baby still wakes to feed at night, know that you’re not doing anything wrong. Responding to your baby with love and instinct is something to feel confident in, not guilty about. 💜

To the moms awake in the dark feeding, rocking, and comforting — you’re doing an amazing job. 🥰

Tag a mama in the trenches tonight. 🫶🏼

——
