I’m planning to post more information over the next couple of weeks breaking down the reality of the risk of NOT giving your pets preventatives, what the actual risk of giving them is (yes we will have a transparent conversation about this) and I want to share what seems to be a MLM structure in the “pet wellness” space I’ve recently uncovered. If you’ve ever noticed that most of the “pet wellness coaches” online have very similar talking points to scare you away from conventional veterinary recommendations and then they all have a “low tox guide” to sell you attached to it: that is NOT a coincidence and I’ve figured out why.
These people are not medical professionals. Many of them have never even worked in veterinary medicine. Most of them can’t even explain to you how vet recommended flea and tick preventatives actually work. They also don’t even realize that their “natural” alternatives work in a very similar way to kill parasites as the preventatives we recommend and are tested to be overwhelmingly safe.

Many people think (and say) that euthanasia must be the hardest part of our jobs as veterinary professionals. It is not. It is a source of emotion and sadness at my job. But it offers relief, peace and comfort for my patients.
I feel it is very important that we in VetMed offer you as pet parents our perspective about this very deep, very complex topic.
I want to share more but I am starting here, with something I tell most of my clients struggling with this decision.
And if you are struggling with this decision, anticipating the time it is coming or reeling from the recent decision you had to make please know we see you, we are here for you, and your pets are very very lucky to have been yours.

Almost six years ago my first child, Beau, died tragically and unexpectedly just after birth.
I have been through grief counseling and EMDR therapy to work on processing that trauma and the tremendous loss that is the death of a child.
In my job I meet people who have sometimes irrational fears about their pets, especially when they are sick. Sometimes those fears are tied to completely separate experiences in that human’s life that I may never know about.
My experience has helped me to see this in people who are scared. It has made me a better doctor because I am capable of meeting my clients right where they are.
And when my clients are more comfortable and less scared: their pets, my patients, get better care.
Thank you for describing a feeling that can be difficult to convey.
