If you’re from Atlanta, you already know.
🍑 Paschal’s is more than a restaurant — it’s a part of the city’s history. During the American Civil Rights Movement, it served as a gathering place for leaders and visionaries, including conversations involving Martin Luther King Jr. and others working to shape change.
So this was not just any dessert.
I ordered individual servings.
And one extra.
That one extra peach cobbler quickly became the most valuable item in the room.
What followed was a four-person rock-paper-scissors playoff.
Four players.
One cobbler.
Very serious competition.
Technically… I won.
And still didn’t get the cobbler.
Next time, I’ve been advised to order a full pan.

Everyone brought a dish from their homeland and introduced themselves to the camera.
We had curry chicken from Antigua, tinga from Mexico, jollof rice and stewed chicken from Nigeria, Nigerian meat pies, pholouri with apple chutney from Trinidad & Tobago, and Philly cheesesteak sliders representing the U.S.
It turned into a mini cultural exchange… right in the office breakroom.
But then…
there was dessert. 🍑
And that’s when things took an unexpected turn.

I turned around and my staff were on the office computer researching Atlanta history like they’d launched a formal investigation.
Here’s what they found:
1996 Atlanta Olympic Games
• Held: July 19 – August 4, 1996
• Marked the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games.
• Brought global attention to Atlanta.
• My husband and brother attended.
• I was in residency in Milwaukee at the time — working.
Atlanta Child Murders
• Occurred: 1979–1981
• 29 children, adolescents, and young adults were killed.
• Wayne Williams was convicted in 1982 for two adult murders; many believe he was responsible for others.
• During that time, curfews were enforced.
• A nightly television reminder aired:
“It’s 8:00 PM. Do you know where your child is?”
This wasn’t folklore.
It was real.
Ku Klux Klan (Georgia presence)
• Active in Georgia throughout the 20th century.
• Historically associated with racial terror, intimidation, and violence.
• Their presence shaped political and social structures in the South for decades.
Mayor Maynard Jackson
• Born: March 23, 1938
• Died: June 23, 2003
• First Black mayor of Atlanta (served 1974–1982, 1990–1994).
• Offered a reward during the Atlanta Child Murders investigation.
• Instrumental in expanding minority participation in city contracts and airport development.
So no… I did not attend the 1996 Olympics.
I was in residency.
But all of this?
It wasn’t ancient history.
It was Atlanta.
