If you’ve been here a while, you’ll know that we were a family for years!! It was imperative that she learned such a vital, life saving skill. While she no longer takes lessons, their mission and work has always remained essential. So I’m sharing an expert from their blog below.
Why Choosing the Right Swimsuit Matters
“Swimsuit shopping for your kiddo is not just about fun patterns and designs (though those are important, too!). It’s also about being sure you’re choosing one that’s easy to spot in the water.
🌸 Opt for Bright and Visible Colors
Lean towards bright colors like pinks, oranges or yellows, like those first few colors in the rainbow! Think about it… the brighter their suit and the easier it is to spot, the faster you (and a lifeguard!) can find them in the water.
🚫 Avoid Hard-to-See Colors
Though we know there are lots of other shades on the shelves, some just aren’t ideal for time in the water. While blue or green may remind you of that beautiful ocean water or be your little one’s favorite color, it’s not the right choice for swimwear. These colors tend to blend in with the water, making it harder to spot them! Darker colors like deep purples or blacks, or even bright white, can give your eyes a hard time, too!”
Did you know that swimsuit color could impact your child’s safety in the water?

After sharing the viral post of the Black pregnant patient being mistreated, I promised to gather some resources for finding #blackphysicians so here we are! If you know of any others please feel free to share in the comments.
Black physicians make up about 5% of physicians. With the current medical landscape many are seeking to find Black physicians. The amount of DMs and emails I get asking for help let’s me know that this info is much needed.
I’m also sharing some physician accounts in my stories right now; more #blackdoctors doing amazing work and educating on social media. I’ll save them to a highlight as well for future reference.

It’s Black Maternal Health Week so I want to make sure my sisters are informed on how to optimize your health BEFORE you become pregnant.
A preconceptual visit is one in which medical issues & health concerns affecting a potential pregnancy are addressed. Amongst other things, this may be a time where medication changes are planned. Allowing a patient to transition from meds not safe for pregnancy to ones that are.
Preventative health visits are just that. Have you had a recent annual exam? Is your mammogram, if indicated, up to date? Have you had routine blood work? Certain testing is generally avoided during pregnancy, unless indicated, so ideally being up to date on routine health visits is a plus!
Start taking a prenatal vitamin WITH adequate folic acid (400mcg). This is to help prevent neural tube defects such a spina bifida & similar conditions.
Get to know your family history. Are there any known genetic conditions present?
Get moving! If you’re already working out then carry on! If not, starting a program pre pregnancy may help you to be more motivated to stay moving once pregnant. (See my previous reels on exercise in pregnancy). While weight loss in pregnancy is not recommended, if you have goals you can definitely work on achieving them prior to pregnancy.
Clean up your diet! Read labels. Limit processed foods and preservative rich foods. Eat more fresh fruits & vegetables. Drink more water.
Stop drinking, smoking & any illicit drug use. Alcohol use is well associated w/fetal alcohol syndrome. Smoking and drug use can lead to intrauterine fetal growth restriction, placental abruption & potentially fetal demise.
Begin to limit your caffeine intake. This includes, coffee, tea, pop etc. Once pregnant it’s recommended to consume less than 200mg/day. This is about 1 12 oz. cup of caffeinated coffee. It may be “easier” to cut back before pregnancy than during.
Let me know if you’ve found this helpful in the comments!

Checking once a month, about a week after your period can help you become familiar with your breast tissue. Checking after your period can help eliminate any confusion if you happen to be someone who experiences #breasttenderness before your periods.
Don’t worry if you miss a month. Patients always say “Dr. King I don’t do them every month.” To which I reply, that’s ok! What’s most important is that you are comfortable doing the exam and thereby familiar with you body.
If you notice and skin changes (dimpling, peeling, redness, warmth), tenderness/pain, swelling or a lump you need to go and see your doctor. Don’t be scared, I know that’s easier said than done. Just make the appointment. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The earlier a diagnosis is made the better the prognosis. And guess what, it’s quite possible that you won’t have #breastcancer but you won’t know until you go. Make yourself a priority if you find a concern.
Right now mammograms, clinical breast exams and self breast exams are our main tools to screen for and detect breast cancer. Women should start getting #mammograms at age 40, or sooner based on family history. #breastexams can start at age 21. I hope this helps, share with the ladies in your life! Have you done a? Have you had a?
