Day 1: ~1200m/4,000ft straight uphill to our basecamp on Acatenango at 3550m elevation. When we got there it was cloudy and visibility of Fuego from basecamp was poor, so we decided as a group not to hike anymore that night and instead to try and summit in the AM when it was more likely to be clear. We felt extra good about this decision when a huge thunderstorm rolled in and we were warm and dry at camp instead of sliding in the mud down an exposed ridge above the treeline ⚡️⛈️⚡️
Day 2: Woke up at 3am to descend 400m down Acatenango, cross a ridge and climb 400m up Fuego to watch it erupt at sunrise. We didn’t see lava (😭) but it was billowing smoke and steam!! We also had views of the city, Volcán Agua, and our base camp over on Acatenango. 400m back down and up again and we were back at basecamp ready to pack up and descend 1200m. The whole way down we were in awe of how steep of an ascent we’d made the day before.
Unfortunately, my watch died, so as we all know none of this counts. 😂 I also suspect these elevation stats I pulled from the web are underestimates.
Anyway then we made our way to our hotel, where it turns out we could have been watching the volcano erupt from the comfort of our bed the whole time 😂
