Being back to ‘normal life’ is so… bland. I’m aggressively looking for adventures, debating whether a local road trip counts as “self care,” and pretending I’m not sitting on my front porch needing to get ready for another shift behind the bar.
There’s something deeply humbling about going from black sand beaches, glacier lagoons, and moss-covered lava fields to sitting in traffic behind someone with a “Salt Life” sticker doing 12 under the speed limit.
But maybe that’s the trick with travel. It ruins you a little. Suddenly your brain is always chasing that feeling again… The cold air off the North Atlantic, gas station hot dogs in the middle of nowhere that are surprisingly delicious, laying in a grassy pasture in the middle of the night where the midnight sun is still out and those moments where you realize you’re somehow standing in a place that doesn’t even feel real. A place you watched on your favorite TV show and it seemed out of reach.
Until then, I’ll settle for local adventures, a trip to the state park, and gaslighting myself into believing Delaware has plenty of things to do.
Life is so very fleeting.

Recent changes from Iceland’s Nature Conservation Agency mean drone permits in many protected areas will now only be approved for things like research, inspections, film productions, news coverage, and officially permitted events. For photographers, travelers, and independent storytellers, that likely means the end of legal drone access in places like Skógafoss, Gullfoss, Dyrhólaey, Mývatn, and more.
And honestly… that part hurts.
Some of us spent years trying to do it the right way — applying for permits, respecting wildlife, following flight restrictions, keeping distance from people, and trying to showcase Iceland’s beauty responsibly. But when too many people ignore the rules, everyone eventually pays the price.
This footage feels even more special now. Not just because of the waterfall itself, but because moments like this may become far rarer in the future.
I’ll always support protecting Iceland’s fragile landscapes. I just wish responsible creators weren’t disappearing with the reckless ones.

I have a Master’s degree in Molecular Computing. Am I using it to code the future or build quantum algorithms? Absolutely not. For 22 seasons now, I’ve spent my summers on and off right here at The Back Porch Café, and this summer I return to running my own twisted little apothecary of libations.
I’m listening to the rain while muddling dried lavender with a mortar and pestle, releasing oils that smell like a French countryside that’s seen some things. Then comes the tedious part: peeling lemons and meticulously carving away every molecule of the white pith. Leave the pith, and the whole batch turns into a bitter, unpalatable mess. Strip it clean, and you get the kind of smooth, velvet infusion a proper Lavender Lemon Drop deserves. (My predecessors, Bee and Eduardo, would be proud)

In 2021, Ray and I spent ten days chasing a ghost of a plan across 2,000 miles of gravel and basalt. We started as wide-eyed pilgrims, stopping for every trickle of water falling off a cliff. But Iceland wears you down with its own perfection. By day six, we were actually saying, “Let’s skip that one” passing up cascades that would be the crown jewel of any other country on Earth just because we were tired.
Then we stumbled into Goðafoss.
The “Waterfall of the Gods.” Legend says a lawspeaker tossed his Norse idols into these churning depths to signal a new age. Standing there in the July heat, engulfed by swarms of black flies and the roar of the Skjálfandafljót river, you realize the itinerary doesn’t matter. My story starts in the salt and heat of Rincón, Puerto Rico. I’m the son of two surfers who ran a guest house and restaurant originally called Sandy Beach Surf Club (changed to inn years later). They were advocates for the environment and social justice, something that stuck with me and shaped a lot of my choices later on.
I grew up in the chaos of hospitality but somehow took a hard left into academia, earning a Master’s in DNA computing, thanks in part to my dad handing me my first computer at age seven to help manage guesthouse reservations.
But hospitality has a way of pulling you back. Think Michael Corleone: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in…” I bartended and served my way through college in Rincón at spots like Tamboo (voted one of the best bars in America), and seasonally in Rehoboth Beach, where I eventually landed full-time in 2012.
I cut my teeth at the Back Porch Café and Nage (before it became Fork&Flask and later La Vida Hospitality), and worked under the late Matt Haley at SoDel Concepts. I learned that hospitality isn’t just about food, it’s about taking care of people.
After a short stint in R&D in the defense sector, I took that ethos to the skies, joining the airline industry in 2013 and finding a new calling in union advocacy. Standing up for the workforce became second nature.
Today, I split my time between the jumpseat and my own company, DRI Media, where I skip the corporate fluff to do design and marketing for small, underserved businesses, because everyone deserves a voice, not just the ones with big budgets.
And when the work is done? I’m a proud nerd. You’ll find me in costume at a Renn Faire, the gym, a concert with my best friend or traveling with a camera in one hand and a fork in the other, always chasing the next great meal, view, or adventure. Or at home, on the couch, with my two cats.
