I've been Been keen for a bit more travel ever since I got my Amflow over a year ago.
This link by Cascade Components increases the stock rear wheel travel from 150mm to 160mm by increasing the leverage on the shock.
The link also increases the frame progression from 21 to 27%, which I was a little sceptical about on paper, but it is still relatively easy to use full travel with a coil with a shade under 30% sag.
The CNC machined Cascade link looks way better than the stock cast aluminium link and results in a smoother, more comfortable ride by being able to use more travel. It also increases traction especially for climbing rough terrain, but the trade off is losing a bit of support from the damper, so you're likely to want to run a little more LSC.
Fitment, this is the part I was pretty surprised with, as I ended up shimming all three pivots on both sides by between 0.3 and 0.4mm. This may not sound like much, but in a heavily braced area, it's a long way to push the inner race of the bearings to meet the frame and will cause a huge amount of excess preload on the pivot bearings and stress on the clevis joint to pinch the pivot spacers at the top of the seat stay.
Cascades' response was, "if it fit your frame precisely, it wouldn't fit another frame" (due to inconsistencies in manufacturing) which in my experience (I've checked a fair few of these frames) and found I'm lucky to be able to fit a single 0.2mm shim anywhere.
If you've ordered one of these links, I would get yourself some 0.2mm and 0.3mm, 10mm and 12mm I.D shims and shim as required. It will massively increase performance and longevity of the bearings and reduce stress on the seat stay clevis joint.
Been loving the Specialized Butcher T9 tyres for a while now.
I went from Maxxis to Specialized after having several problems with Maxxis tyres in a very short period of time, and felt I had to change something.
I run the grid trail casing tyres, and I know I'm in the minority, but I love the performance advantages that lighter casing tyres offer.
The reduced weight and thinner more pliable casing offers better acceleration, braking, traction and give a more lively feel which I really like.
I believe many riders experience problems with tyres and rim damage due to sub optimal suspension set up (often too much HSC, and/or bottoming out), too much tyre volume, and/or not enough tyre pressure.
For the record, I'm 100kg, I don't experience tyre casing damage and my Raceface ARC30 offset rims remain dent free.
For the record, I won a state DH round (by almost 10secs) on a Santa Cruz tallboy LT with an Ardent and Crossmark tyre back in the day with no inserts, just optimal suspension set up and sufficient tyre pressures.
I'd love to try the Specialized Cannibal tyres, but they only offer them in the grid gravity casing, and I can't justify adding 350g per wheel for a thicker casing I don't require.
I run a Cushcore XC insert in the back, not for rim protection, but to reduce the air volume and make the tyre more progressive, and the added 150g is bearable.
I also find the Specialized grid trail casing less porous and hold air better than the Exo/Exo plus Maxxis tyres I was running.
60 points of engagement vs 120?
I've already ridden this, and didn't really notice any difference in performance, but it does sound a bit quieter and less angry bee like.
It probably reduces drag ever so slightly too, but probably too small of a different to notice, so pretty much only a sound difference.
