The scriptures in the Ranakpur Jain Temple have stories behind each of them. They talk about how the different preachers attained the state of nirvana and various lessons from their lives are carved into the walls of the temple.
The most significant and popular carving is of Lord Parshvanth. It is said that before he attained nirvana, he was a prince and had possession of all worldly desires. He was travelling one day when he spotted a snake trapped in a pile of logs. Out of pity for the snake, the prince set the snake free. Turned out, the snake was trapped that way for a Yagna as an ascetic. By setting the snake free, he disturbed the ascetic. Years later when the prince had left all his worldly desires, the same ascetic tried to drown the prince by summoning a storm. The snake who was saved by the prince was reborn as Lord of Nagas and rushed to protect the prince by spreading his protective hood around him. The carving of this story is such that one cannot find the ends of the snake in the carving. It is so beautiful that one cannot help but marvel at the small detailing of each carving.
The temple is called Chaumukha Temple – Chau meaning four and Mukha meaning faces. This symbolises the quest in one’s life in four dimensions which is one of the key missions of Jainism. One of the main attractions is the idol of Lord Adinath which is four-faced. For the followers of Jainism, Ranakpur Jain Temple is of the utmost importance. It is one of the five most important pilgrimage sites for Jains and is also the largest temple among them.

6 months after going on this trip, as we look at current situation, all these places are fully crowded. No matter if you go as early as sunrise, hundreds of people would alraedy be queuing up at the entrance.
We feel really fortunate to have visisted the City Palace, and all close places when very few would dare travel and visit them at the time of the crisis. None of our plannings could have been better timed.

Built in the Chaturmukha style of temple architecture, the Ranakpur temple is dedicated to Rishabdev, the first Jain Tirthankara. Chaturmukha refers to the four identical idols of Adinatha facing the four directions inside a large ornamented dome called the Meghanada Mandapa. This is the garba griha, which is open on all four sides. The Meghanada Mandapa is a storied majestic structure whose domed roof is large enough to support a multiplicity of divinities.
The origin of this marvellous temple can be traced to a dream that Dharana Shah, a minister in the realm of the Rana of Kumbalgarh, had. Deeply spiritual, Dharana Shah is said to have had a vision of a celestial flying palace with pillars—nalini gulmavimana—a kind of oracle. When he consulted his guru Somasundarji about the significance of the dream, he was told to construct a temple in the shape of the celestial vimana. Dharana found in Rana Kumbha of Mewar a willing patron and supporter and thus commenced the quest to replicate the vimana on earth. When Dharana set about looking for a suitable architect to bring his dream alive, he was fortunate to meet Depaka, a fiercely independent-minded architect, and commissioned him for the project. Conceived and executed under the skilled stewardship of Depaka, the temple is a manifestation of the versatile potential of marble from nearby Rajsamand.

With a total of 953 windows, Hawa Mahal is an architectural feat as it’s the tallest building in the world without a foundation. The monument stands upright because of its pyramidal shape. It is a five-storey building, but due to the lack of solid foundations, it is curved and leans at an angle of 87 degrees. Further, its distinctive rosy colour, which is because of the natural sandstone, is the reason behind Jaipur getting its nickname - the Pink City.
As the name would suggest, it was built to channel natural wind currents to cool the insides.
