I’ve wanted to study abroad since undergrad. When my father passed away, everything changed. I had to put several academic dreams on hold. Even in grad school, studying abroad felt out of reach.
Now, years later—as a first-gen student turned first-gen professor—I’m fulfilling that dream. And I’m doing it as a sociologist from a community college, proudly representing my comunidad in Monterey County.
This will be my first time ever traveling to Europe. I’m embarrassed saying this but I think of my students—many of whom come from working-class, immigrant backgrounds like I do. We carry dreams that take longer to reach. And that’s okay.
These opportunities don’t just show up. I’ve have to seek them out, pitch myself, and remind people that a Mexican immigrant community college sociology professor is an asset!
I live and work in an agricultural, working-class region filled with brilliant immigrants, farmworkers, artists, entrepreneurs, organizers, educators, etc. Dreaming big here is beautiful—but it’s hard. Getting into this program felt surreal. But securing funding? Even harder.
I cried—multiple times & almost lost hope. I applied everywhere. Reached out to institutions, even a local bank. For a moment, it felt like the dream would crumble—not because of merit, but because of lack of money.
But I didn’t give up. After weeks of hustle, I secured the funding. I’m going…y todavía no lo puedo creer!…Pinch me!!
To my students and anyone reading this: There is no deadline for your dreams. You’re not too late. You’re not asking for too much. You are not dreaming too big. You do belong in higher education—even if others don’t believe in you, I do.
