Mothers are already their own harshest critics.

They question every decision, replay every hard moment, and constantly wonder if they are doing enough. The last thing they need is someone else adding to that noise.

Unsolicited criticism and advice don’t motivate. They confirm the doubts that were already there. They add weight to someone who is already carrying so much.

But an unsolicited compliment? That can stop a mother in her tracks in the best possible way. It can be the one thing she holds onto on her hardest days.

If you see a mom today and think she’s awesome — don’t keep it to yourself. Say it. It could be exactly what she needed to hear.

Follow for honest conversations about motherhood, mental health, and everything in between.

Postpartum doesn’t have an expiration date.

If there is a new mama in your life — check on her. Call her. Text her. Show up. Not just in the first few weeks, but in the months after, when everyone has moved on and she is still finding her way back to herself.

And if you are that mama — the one reading this at month four, month six, month eight, wondering why you still don’t feel like you — this is your reminder that six weeks was never the finish line. You are not behind. You are not broken. You are just in a season that deserves far more support than our system gives you.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. Support is available. Click the link in bio to get connected with a therapist who understands.

These words from psychologist Emily Guarnotta hit home, especially during #MaternalMentalHealthMonth. Postpartum depression has many faces, but regardless of how it shows up in your motherhood journey, its impact can be brutal.

As Dr. Guarnotta urges, there’s no shame in getting the help you need. Lean on your village. Find a mental health professional who gets it (if that's accessible to you). There is hope out there – closer than you think. 💙

What if the advice meant to make you present is actually making you spiral?

The “18 summers” saying has good intentions — but for a parent who is already struggling, it doesn’t inspire. It can actually cause more guilt.

I learned that firsthand.

There’s a difference between a message that motivates and one that quietly makes you feel like you’re running out of time. Some parents don’t need more urgency. They need more grace.

Does “18 summers” both you? Do you think there’s a better way to say this?

Type A + new baby = a recipe for feeling like you’re constantly failing. You’re not.

You’ve spent your whole life achieving. Now suddenly the to-do list feels infinite and nothing ever feels done.

The secret? Stop measuring yourself by the wrong ruler.
As a psychologist and mom, here’s what productive actually looks like with a newborn:

👶 Baby is fed ✓
🤰 You are fed ✓
🧑‍🍼 Everyone is alive ✓

That’s it. That’s the whole list.

The moms who navigate this season best aren’t the ones who do more — they’re the ones who learn to let go. I had to learn this the hard way too.

The fog lifted, but the grief didn’t.

This is something I lived through myself — and something I hear all the time from PPD survivors. It’s not that we want another baby. It’s that we wish we could go back and experience the newborn stage, the baby stage, all of it — without the heaviness of depression and anxiety.

We were physically there, but many of us don’t have memories of that time. And the memories that we do have are painful.

If your relationship with your mother was complicated, becoming a mother yourself can bring up things you weren’t prepared for.

Here’s why motherhood can feel so much heavier when the mother wound is unhealed:

1. The absence gets louder. Having a baby has a way of making you acutely aware of what you didn’t have. You may find yourself longing for a mother who calls to check in, who holds the baby so you can sleep, who tells you you’re doing a good job. If that was never your reality, this can feel like a period of grief.

2. Old wounds get reactivated. Your baby needs you completely — and somewhere beneath the surface, that need can stir your own. The unmet needs you learned to bury as a child can resurface in ways that feel confusing and overwhelming.

3. Her voice becomes your inner critic. The way she spoke to you has a way of becoming the way you speak to yourself.

4. The fear of repeating the cycle is exhausting. You are so determined to do it differently. But that determination can show up as second-guessing every reaction.

5. You are grieving and healing while also raising a child. You are doing some of the hardest emotional work of your life, at the same time as one of the most demanding seasons of your life.

If this is you — I want you to know that what you’re carrying is real, and it makes sense that this feels heavy. And the fact that you’re asking these questions, feeling this deeply, and trying this hard — that already tells me everything about the kind of mother you are becoming.

If this resonates, I see you 🤍
