I love my turmeric latte, especially on a cold Melbourne winter afternoon. I make mine using non-dairy alternative milk. The active compound of turmeric is curcumin.
Potential benefits of a turmeric latte:
✅ May reduce inflammation
Curcumin has anti-inflammatory properties that may help with joint discomfort, muscle soreness, and chronic inflammation.
✅ Rich in antioxidants
Turmeric contains compounds that help protect cells from oxidative stress and free-radical damage.
✅ May support immune health
Ingredients commonly added to turmeric lattes—such as ginger and cinnamon—also contain antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds.
✅ Could aid digestion
Turmeric and ginger may help reduce bloating and support healthy digestion in some people.
✅ May support heart health
Some research suggests curcumin may help support healthy blood vessel function and cholesterol balance.
✅ Potential brain health benefits
Early research suggests curcumin may support cognitive function and mood, though more studies are needed.
Due to my genetic history of high cholesterol and heart disease, not only I enjoy drinking turmeric latte, but I believe I am getting the health benefits also.
What is your favourite drink?

One of the most meaningful moments as an author isn’t seeing a sales number… it’s hearing that the message has landed with someone who spends their life helping others.
Recently, I received feedback from a health professional who shared that they found Behind The Smile incredibly valuable — and strongly felt that parents should get their hands on this book and read it.
That meant a lot.
Because Behind The Smile was never written to create fear or overwhelm. It was written to create awareness. To help parents see that sometimes what appears “normal” may actually be the body adapting… and that understanding function, growth, breathing, sleep, habits and development earlier can change a child’s future.
When a fellow health professional says, “A Must-Read for Clinicians and Parents” it reminds me that education is one of the most powerful forms of prevention.
Grateful for every practitioner who continues to learn, stay curious, and work together across disciplines for better outcomes.
And grateful for every parent willing to ask one more question and look one layer deeper.

What if some of the biggest breakthroughs in health don’t come from working harder… but from working together?
Dentistry and osteopathy may seem worlds apart.
One works in millimetres.
The other works in movement.
But both are observing the same human body.
The tongue affects posture.
Breathing affects facial growth.
Jaw position influences the neck.
Tension in the body can show up in the mouth.
Function rarely respects professional boundaries.
Maybe health was never designed to live in silos.
Perhaps the future isn’t dentists trying to become osteopaths.
And it isn’t osteopaths trying to become dentists.
Perhaps it’s about mutual respect, curiosity, and understanding that every practitioner sees a different window into the same person.
The more I learn, the more I realise: healing doesn’t happen because one profession wins.
It happens when the patient does.
Less territory.
More teamwork.
Less “Who is right?”
More “What does this person need?”
That’s where the magic lives.

Today, I brought down Dr Manish Shah from Sydney to spend the entire day teaching our team about nutritional medicine.
Not because we want to chase trends.
But because I truly believe that to help others heal better, we must first understand ourselves better.
The body is not isolated systems.
We are what we eat.
Nutrition affects inflammation, sleep, enzymes, and how our bodies grow, behave, heal and function.
The deeper I go into myofunctional and functional healthcare, the more I realise that real health care is about connection, not separation.
I’m incredibly grateful that our team is committed to learning beyond dentistry — to better understand the human body, the nervous system, metabolism, and the foundations of health.
Because better practitioners never stop being students.
Thank you Dr Manish Shah for sharing your wisdom, passion, and knowledge with us today. The learning never stops.

The deeper I go into learning about primitive reflexes, the more I feel like I’m getting closer to the true roots of functional issues.
So many things we see clinically — mouth breathing, poor tongue posture, tension patterns, clenching, feeding difficulties, airway issues, postural instability, even emotional regulation challenges — may not simply be “bad habits.” Sometimes they are protective neurological patterns that were never fully integrated.
What fascinates me is how beautifully connected the body really is.
The nervous system, fascia, breathing, posture, jaws, tongue function and movement patterns are all constantly communicating with each other.
When primitive reflexes remain active beyond the developmental stages they were designed for, the body often adapts in ways that can influence growth, function and behaviour for years.
The more I learn, the more I realise that true healing is rarely about forcing or fighting the body.
It is often about understanding why the body adapted in the first place… and then gently guiding it toward safety, balance and function.
I genuinely feel this journey is bringing me closer to understanding the deeper “why” behind many of the functional challenges we see every day.
And honestly, that makes me even more hopeful about the future of integrative and myofunctional care.
Thank you for bringing everyone together over the last 4 days of intensive learning. Dr Leah Light is one phenomenal teacher. I now can see the light at the end of the tunnel (pardon the pun).

I am feeling humbled to receive a personalized message from the author of this new book,
Dr Mahony has been an airway-focused specialist #orthodontist for almost 40 years. He is an international educator and only one of very few specialist orthodontists in the world that understands about the importance of functional health, especially for the growing children.
Now he has published a book, intended for parents to learn about how their children sleep. I believe this will be a must read for all parents.
I am certainly looking forward to reading it.
Thank you Dr Mahony for all you do…

5 horror movies in #myofunctionaldentistry
(The kind that don’t scream… but slowly change everything.):
1. The Tongue Tie
Looks small. Often dismissed.
But a restricted tongue can quietly affect breathing, swallowing, speech, posture—and even facial development.
It’s not just a “tie”… it’s a tether on growth.
2. The Snoring
“Cute” in kids. “Normal” in adults.
Except it’s neither.
Snoring is often the sound of a struggling airway—night after night of compromised breathing.
3. The Narrow Jaws
Crowded teeth aren’t just a space problem.
They’re often a sign the jaws didn’t develop to their full potential… leaving less room for the tongue—and the airway.
4. The High Palate
A beautifully arched palate? Or a silent red flag?
A high, narrow palate often reflects altered tongue posture and can mean reduced nasal airway space.
5. The Mouth Breathing
Open lips. Dry mouth. Forward head posture.
It looks harmless—but chronic mouth breathing can influence everything from facial growth to sleep quality and long-term health.
⸻
The real horror?
These signs are often called “normal.”
But normal isn’t always healthy.
And what’s common isn’t always right.
The good news?
When you see them early… you can change the story.

Chewing isn’t just about breaking down food. It’s one of the strongest biological messages the jaws receive during childhood.
👉 Hard chewing switches on “growth mode.”
When kids chew firm, fibrous foods (think carrots, apples, jerky, nuts), tiny pressure receptors in the teeth and periodontal ligaments send messages to the brain.
The brain responds by stimulating the masseter and temporalis muscles, which pull on the jaws and signal them to grow wider, stronger, and more forward.
It’s essentially:
More chewing → more muscle work → more bone remodeling → better facial development.
👉 Soft diets create softer faces.
Modern diets are mostly soft: pouches, processed foods, yoghurts, purees.
Kids simply don’t chew enough.
Less chewing means:
• Under-stimulated jaw muscles
• Narrower dental arches
• Smaller airway volume
• Higher likelihood of crowding and long-face growth patterns
👉 Chewing helps the tongue “find its home.”
Hard chewing encourages the tongue to move upward to stabilize the palate during mastication. This improves tongue posture, a major factor in palatal width.
👉 Anthropologists proved it.
Traditional cultures eating tougher, unprocessed foods show almost no crowding and wider jaws, while modern populations with soft diets have significantly narrower arches.
The change happened within just one or two generations.
👉 Growth hormones… from chewing? Yes.
Studies show that heavy chewing increases activity in the masseter muscles, which triggers the release of local growth factors (like IGF-1) that help jaws grow to their genetic potential.
If you want strong jaws, a wide palate, and healthier airways, give your child tougher foods to chew every day — not just “chew toys” or appliances.

An incredible case study of a 10-year old, who only needed 10 months of treatment to unlock her individual genetic potential.
She presented with concerns of #dentalcrowding and #crookedteeth.
After a thorough functional oral health evaluation and gathering of comprehensive #preorthodontic records (photos, videos, 3D digital dental study models and radiographs), I found the root causes of his presenting concerns were:
1. constant #mouthbreathing
2. low #tongueposture
3. open lip posture
4. inability to swallow with the tongue properly
5. lips and cheeks pushing inward with swallow
Consequently, my team and I assisted the patient with exercises of her muscles (muscles of the mouth and face) to train her tongue to elevate up, her lips to close in a relax manner, and to establish nasal breathing. We used a number of tools as well to help escalate the effectiveness of the exercises.
The patient was also managed by a focused on neuro development.
In 10 months, with amazing compliance, this patient managed to use her orofacial muscular optimal functions to develop the jaws to their maximum unique potentials. and no expansion plates were used. No teeth were extracted.
How has she managed to achieve the result? The is the best expander of the jaws. The cheeks and lips need to exert minimal pressure inward to allow the jaws to widen naturally.

Here is an update of an incredible case study that I presented a few years ago.
A 10-year old patient, who presented with concerns of #dentalcrowding and #crookedteeth.
After a thorough functional oral health evaluation and gathering of comprehensive #preorthodontic records (photos, videos, 3D digital dental study models and radiographs), I found the root causes of his presenting concerns were:
1. constant #mouthbreathing
2. tongue tied to the lower jaw
3. open lip posture
4. inability to swallow with the tongue
5. lips and cheeks pushing inward with swallow
Consequently, my team and I assisted the patient with exercises of his #orofacial muscles (muscles of the mouth and face) to train his tongue to elevate up, his lips to close in a relax manner, and to establish nasal breathing. We used a number of tools as well to help escalate the effectiveness of the exercises.
I also used a laser to release the restrictive. The patient was also managed by a focused on neuro development.
In 10 months, with amazing compliance, this patient managed to use his orofacial muscular optimal functions to develop the jaws to their maximum unique potentials. and no expansion plates were used. No teeth were extracted.
5 years after the treatment was completed, his orofacial functions remain stable, resulting in the teeth and bite being optimal in functional relationships and aesthetics.
How has he managed to retain the result? The muscles of the mouth and face, especially the tongue, are the best retainers for the teeth and bite, as long as they are functioning optimally.
