We’d like to thank a dear friend of The Female Edit, Dr Carla Brion, for sitting down with us this June to chat all things Chinese medicine, women’s health and fertility, helping us shine a light on Infertility Awareness Month ❤️‍🩹

Swipe to the end to see and at the very beginning of their friendship... long before The Female Edit, when they were simply two practitioners bonded by a mutual love of babies, baby bumps, hormones and trying to convince people that period pain isn’t something you just have to “put up with.”

Some friendships are built over wine. Theirs? Over acupuncture needles, bone broth, BBT charts and endless conversations about the female body ☯

Carla came in for a blonde refresh, working with her beautiful natural red base to create a softer, brighter feel.

By enhancing what was already there, we were able to add lightness and dimension while maintaining warmth and depth throughout the hair.

Blonding has evolved far beyond the standard full or half head, it’s now a customised, strategically placed service that’s as artistic as it is personal.

A subtle refresh that feels natural, effortless, and beautifully lived-in.

|| To the women in their two week wait right now — this post is for you. 🤍

The *TWW* should come with a warning label ⚠️(IYKYK). Every twinge. Every symptom. Every 2am Google search...

Wether you’re TTC naturally or have just had your IVF embryo transfer, the not-knowing is one of the hardest things. And no amount of “stay positive!” makes the waiting easier.

🫶🏼What can help? Telling your nervous system it’s safe. Cue, TCM.

When we are stressed, there is less blood flowing through our reproductive organs.
Acupuncture activates your parasympathetic state — the ‘rest, digest and receive’ mode — calming cortisol, supporting progesterone, and creating the most nourishing internal environment possible while you wait. Chinese herbs work alongside this, gently tending to your body from the inside. They can also help to hold and support an early pregnancy.

Research (published in 2025) confirmed what we see every day in clinic: that acupuncture produces significant, measurable reductions in fertility + IVF related anxiety and stress — even from a single session! (They don’t call it an acupuncture high for nothing! 🧘🏽‍♀️)

You deserve support and you don’t have to do the TWW alone. Rest, connect with your body and be held accountable

Bookings for late June and July now available.

⚡️⚡️⚡️
She’d had painful periods for years. She came in during her cycle, struggling up the stairs, barely able to sit comfortably. She walked out an hour later — her pain was gone.

This is not unusual in my clinic and for after an acupuncture treatment. The amazing effects never get old and I’ll never take this medicine for granted.

In TCM, period pain (dysmenorrhea) is most commonly caused by Blood stasis — where Qi and Blood aren’t flowing freely through the uterus and pelvis. The result? Cramping, clots, stabbing or dragging pain that can floor you for days.

Acupuncture can help by:
🤍 Moving stagnant Blood and Qi through the uterus, increasing circulation and warmth
🤍 Calming the nervous system and reducing prostaglandin-driven inflammation
🤍 Releasing endorphins — your body’s own natural painkillers
🤍 Regulating the flow of the period so it moves freely, not forcefully.

Sometimes the relief is felt on the table. Sometimes within hours. And with consistent treatment, the pattern shifts — so each cycle becomes easier than the last.
Painful periods are incredibly common. But they are not normal or something you just have to live with.

If this sounds like your every month, I’d love to support you. I’m based in Adelaide and I have a special interest in women’s health — endometriosis, painful periods, fertility and pregnancy.

|| This is what a week in clinic looks like for me — and honestly, it never looks the same twice (pinch me, I love my job!)

From supporting women through the early days of IVF, to easing pregnancy insomnia at 3am (liver time), to helping bodies find their rhythm again after an endo flare — there is so much that acupuncture and Chinese medicine can hold space for.

I’ve had women come in exhausted, anxious, in pain, or simply feeling disconnected from their bodies. And every single time, I’m reminded of how capable the body is of returning to balance when it’s given the right support.

Whether you’re navigating fertility, pregnancy, your cycle, or just trying to feel like yourself again — there’s always something TCM can offer you.

Shoutout to all my ladies who show up weekly, fortnightly, monthly for themselves and their health. Proud of you!

|| In TCM, the uterus is called the Bāo Gōng (胞宮) — literally translated as the Baby or Child Palace. And I love this name, because it does exactly what a palace should: it shelters, nourishes and protects new life.

Understanding your Baby Palace through a TCM lens is one of the most empowering things you can do for your reproductive health — whether you’re trying to conceive, managing endometriosis, or growing a baby right now.

🏯 What is the Baby Palace in TCM?
The Baby Palace isn’t just the physical uterus — it’s an extraordinary organ in TCM, connected to both the Heart (which governs the blood and spirit) and the Kidney (which holds our deepest reproductive essence, or Jing). It’s also nourished by the Chong Mai — the Penetrating Vessel — one of our most important meridians for menstruation, fertility and pregnancy.

When the Baby Palace is well-nourished and in balance, menstrual cycles are regular, the uterine lining is rich and receptive, conception comes more easily, and pregnancy is better supported.

🌿 How does TCM nourish the Baby Palace?
This is where the magic happens. Acupuncture and herbal medicine work together to:

✦ Build and move Blood to create a rich, receptive uterine lining
✦ Warm and regulate the uterus to ease pain and improve implantation conditions
✦ Tonify Kidney Jing — supporting egg quality, hormone balance and deep reproductive vitality
✦ Smooth Liver Qi — calming the nervous system and regulating the cycle
✦ Clear stasis — gently dissolving adhesions and reducing inflammation (particularly relevant for endo)

Over time, this isn’t just symptom relief. It’s a genuine restoration of the conditions your body needs to thrive.

Your reproductive health the deep nourishment it deserves — whether you’re on a fertility journey, managing endo, or growing a little one — I’d love to support you.

|| we are really in the midst of autumn now. Like the leaves that change in colour, so do our bodies in accordance with the season.

Autumn is governed by the element of METAL; cool, retreating, structured and boundary forming. It’s the sound of weeping and the emotion of grief. Autumn can feel heavy. It is the falling of the leaves.
We are prone to colds + flus, our lungs, bowels and respiratory tract are most vulnerable. Our skin & hair become drier…

🍂 My top 3 TCM tips for women to thrive this autumn:

🤍 1. Nourish your Lung Qi:
Autumn belongs to the Lung in TCM. The dry autumn air can deplete lung moisture, leading to dry skin, a dry cough or lowered immunity. Support your lungs by adding warm, white-coloured foods to your diet — think pear, daikon radish, white sesame and congee. And stay hydrated with warm drinks, teas etc.

🔥 2. Protect your Yang energy:
As the days shorten, your body starts conserving warmth — just like nature does. Keep your lower back, neck and belly covered in the cooler air, swap cold and raw foods for warm and cooked, and honour earlier bedtimes. This is especially important if you’re navigating endo, a fertility journey or postpartum recovery.

🌬️ 3. Honour the season of letting go:
The lungs (paired with the emotion of grief) regulate our capacity to release. Autumn gently asks us to let go — of what no longer serves us, of held tension, of the busy pace of summer. Breathwork, rest and acupuncture are beautiful ways to support your nervous system through this shift.

Your body is always in conversation with the season. 🍂 When we listen, real healing becomes possible.

Navigating this season in Adelaide and want support? I’d love to help. Book via the link in bio. 💛

||ins & outs…

As ENDOEMTRIOSIS AWARENESS MONTH comes to a close, I thought it fitting to share one of my fav endo reels of the past...

Let’s talk about what’s actually helpful—and what’s not—when it comes to living with endo.
As a women’s health practitioner with 15+ years supporting women with endo, and having endometriosis myself, I have seen firsthand what can help some, and what can hinder.

From a Chinese medicine perspective, endometriosis is often linked with Qi & Blood stagnation, inflammation, and even cold.

Here’s what I recommend to my endo girlies I see in clinic the can help manage this invisible illness.

|| lovelies…
I thought it was time I re-introduced myself 🤍

I’m Carla — Doctor of Chinese Medicine, acupuncturist, herbalist & women’s health practitioner… and also a mum of 3, beach lover, and lifelong curious and wandering soul. I also co-own - a little TCM based business for women.

I’ve been supporting women through all stages of life for the past 14 years, (completing my studies at RMIT in Melbourne with an internship in China). My true interest lies in women’s health — from endometriosis to fertility, pregnancy, postpartum and beyond. In my practice, I use a combination of TCM herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxa, diet therapy & integrated health practices.

Outside the clinic, you’ll find me chasing sunshine, while raising three wild and wonderful kids; exploring the world (when I can - travel is my soul food and I’ve been to over 30 different countries), curled up with a book (but audiobooks these days) and going out for dinner with my girlfriends. I love love love all animals, and being in nature. I’m very into my music and appreciate beautiful fashion. Pre-kids, I used to surf and do a lot of yoga and hope to get back to those - one day. Also I love the colour PINK, obsessed.

Some dreams i have, big and small include writing a book, completing a triathlon, continuing learning Italian, travelling (and more travel) and one day working for an NFP in the women’s health sphere. Stay tuned, it’s a lot I know. 🤣🤣

I feel so grateful to be serving women in this beautiful community — holding space, sharing knowledge, and weaving together ancient wisdom with a modern, holistic touch.

Thanks for being here.
Love,
Carla
