What do Jonathan Anderson, Jannick Sinner & the chronically unwell have in common?

Interestingly a lot more than you might realise.

As a new Type 1 Diabetic, I surprisingly saw my own challenges in a different font:

1. Constant failure
2. The pressure to ā€˜get it right’ / perfectionism
3. Limiting self-talk

What brings together elite athletes, designers & the chronically is that they all are mental athletes first, masters of their discipline second.

This idea is absolutely everywhere & I am fascinated
My whole life I have been a destination over journey person.

It was always about the end goal & that frankly - suffering was even a pre-requisite. (Girlboss era 2016)

But running made me fall in love with the journey.

I finally got what people meant about ā€˜focusing on the journey’ - and despite having Type 1 Diabetes the training, the planning, the lows built me beyond my expectations - the self-trust permeates into so many areas of my life.

I cannot describe how proud I felt of myself here - it represents having conquered my mind, my body, my condition.

& I plan on doing it again - we are doing a half marathon!!!

Type 1 Diabetes who????

The thought of our own mortality is such a strange one - and that is coming from a doctor who sees *plenty* of death.

Here are some reflections and lessons I learnt that have helped me to live again with Type 1 Diabetes.

This is my favourite thing to reply with šŸ˜‰

People have no idea of the mental / emotional / physical rollercoaster we ride each day with Type 1 Diabetes. But it makes you sharper, stronger & resilient in a way I’ve never known.

So yes - pending it doesn’t defy physics - there isn’t anything I can’t do!!!!

Type 1 Diabetes has demanded resilience from me like I never knew.

It doesn’t matter if you’re busy, not in the mood or sick.

It’s the game that never stops.
But I’m a persistent person that never stops:)

I actually cried before I started running 😭

Type 1 Diabetes is for life, but ending the year running my first race felt so full circle.

It was a celebration of conquering this diagnosis. Of reclaiming power, autonomy & rebuilding my confidence.

Running is particularly challenging for Type 1 Diabetics because there is so much to manage. My worst case scenario is I collapse and have a seizure or worse. So to be able to compete like this was just incredible - and honestly something I didn’t think I’d never get to do.

Sharing this with my friends and family that had seen me in those messy early days to celebrating with me now meant the world šŸ’—
Chapter 1: I was the patient I forgot to see

Sports psychology changed my life.

Being a Doctor - I knew how to manage my Type 1 Diabetes.

But there was a whole mental game that no one was talking about.

Because knowing and consistently doing are separate things entirely.

Most of us are just expected to ā€˜figure it out’ - when athletes are taught these foundational tools from day 1.

That’s why they succeed, despite losses.
They don’t spiral into self-doubt.
They don’t question their self-worth with every failure.

I would argue the stakes are higher off the court than on it.

This is how sports psychology took me from my death bed to becoming the strongest, most resilient and healthiest version of myself - yet.

To anyone facing any new challenge in life -

Take your time to:
Process.
Grieve.
Get angry.
Get all your emotions out as they are.

It will feel uncomfortable as it happens, but it’s how you get to your new rhythm of life.

I tried to rush this as I felt emotionally overwhelmed - I tried to heal too quickly. Fast forward to normality - or my old life. But it’s just not how it works.

Through my journey with Type 1 Diabetes, I learned that the grief model was initially created to cope with disease - not death.

I slowed & allowed myself to go through these stages - I still do.

And only then did I find my new rhythm of this glorious life ✨
