When you buy sunscreen that says SPF 30 or 50 on the packaging, you may assume that the product will give you the SPF mentioned. And it will- as long as you apply it according to how they tested it in the lab, which is application of 2mg/cm2 on skin.
For the face, this would be about 1/4 of a teaspoon (around 1.25 ml) or roughly 2 finger lengths (more for large faces, lesser for small faces). Most consumers apply much less than this.
Remember that this is just a guide to give you an idea.
If you have oily skin, buy a gel or lotion based sunscreen that you can apply atleast 1 fingerlength and reapply after 2-3 hours.
