My mother has been suffering with health problems for years, and it was a lot worse when I was a youth.
Nerve damage from a botched spinal surgery had left her with a diagnosis of complex regional pain syndrome: a severe, chronic health condition accompanied by sensory and motor abnormalities and excruciating pain.
During my childhood and adolescence, it seemed like she spent more time in the hospital than at home. She became physiologically dependent on and addicted to her medications. She became depressed too, and when I gazed into her eyes I could no longer see my loving mother: She was in there, but she was far away.
Still, from her hospital bed, cognitively impaired from pain and massive doses of opioids and benzodiazepines, my mother still found a way to help me with my homework and teach me how to write. And my father, through it all, taught me everything else.
Today, my mother has come a long way with respect to management of her chronic pain condition. She can now walk to the local bookstore to see my book on its shelves and remember the time when I struggled to write at all. This book is as much the accomplishment of my mother and father as it is mine.
And for that, I’m grateful. 😊✌️
