🔹 Catching up with old friends and making new ones
🔹 Being mamma shark 😆 (officially transitioned from Mbak to Ibu)

When most people find out that I work on shark conservation, they assume I spend all my time in the ocean handing out with sharks. But most of my field work happens in fish markets, not in the ocean 🦈

Here’s why ↓
Sharks are in trouble — over a third of species are threatened with extinction, and overfishing is the biggest driver. But since overfishing is caused by humans, saving sharks ultimately depends on changing human behaviour.

That’s why engaging fishers and coastal communities isn’t optional in shark conservation — it’s essential. For three interrelated reasons:

1️⃣ To mitigate threats — to halt overfishing, we have to change how people use the ocean.
2️⃣ To ensure fairness — reducing shark fishing mortality usually imposes costs, and we can’t keep expecting coastal communities already on the margins to subsidise global biodiversity goals from their own incomes. Especially when huge commercial companies continue to profit from the destruction of the ocean.
3️⃣ Because fairness IS effectiveness — conservation that ignores people’s basic needs is seen as socially illegitimate, and people simply don’t comply.

Shark conservation isn’t really about managing sharks. It’s about managing the systems and incentives that drive biodiversity loss. And that’s why I spend my time chatting to people instead of swimming in the ocean.

📢 BIG NEWS from Lombok: we just permanently retired two shark longline fishing boats in East Lombok 🦈🤩

In what we believe is Indonesia’s first vessel buyout scheme, worked with fishers and the provincial fisheries department to design a voluntary incentive-compatible reverse auction that lets fishers exit on their own terms. Two boats, which caught >400 sharks in the last year, have been decommissioned, fairly and cost-effectively avoiding thousands more sharks being caught in the coming years. It’s a small start, but a proof of concept for how marine conservation and fairness can go hand in hand, when designed and implemented through a people-centred evidence-based process 🤝🤓 Full update from the field linked in bio 🔗

🤩 Very proud of & for driving the process.

Come with me & my amazing team of collaborators to deploy BRUVS — Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (basically underwater camera traps) — in one of Indonesia’s most important shark habitats 🦈🎥

& are working with local fishers, the Panglima Laot (a customary marine management institution unique to Aceh) and researchers from to survey sharks and rays, and generate other useful biodiversity metrics, in the Aceh Jaya Marine Conservation Area – building the evidence base for better management, together. #BRUVS #Sharks #Aceh #Indonesia #WomenInScience

Yesterday was ‘Hari Nelayan Nasional’ in Indonesia (National Fishers Day) 🇮🇩🎣 A day to appreciate the services of Indonesian fishers in their efforts to fulfill the nutritional needs of Indonesia’s society (and indeed, the world). This post also acknowledges & appreciates the role fishers can play in protecting marine & coastal biodiversity (and is an excuse to shared these beautiful photos by for on my grid) 💙🦈

Thank you for capturing the beauty of Aceh’s coastline, and fishers’ efforts to release critically endangered species as part of our program to protect marine biodiversity while supporting coastal livelihoods 🥹🙏🏼
