🧠 TRAIN ONE SIDE. HELP BOTH SIDES.

Cross-education is one of the most fascinating and clinically relevant phenomena in rehabilitation science.

In this recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, Rodríguez-Coloma and colleagues evaluated whether unilateral resistance training could attenuate the neuromuscular decline associated with limb immobilisation.

Their findings suggest that:

✔️ Training the non-immobilised limb significantly reduces strength loss in the immobilised limb.

✔️ The effect appears to be predominantly neural rather than muscular, highlighting the role of central nervous system adaptations.

✔️ Cross-education may serve as an effective rehabilitation adjunct during periods of immobilisation following injury or surgery.

✔️ Higher-intensity unilateral resistance training appears to produce the greatest protective effect.

For orthopaedic and sports medicine patients, this has important implications after ACL reconstruction, fracture fixation, rotator cuff repair, and other conditions requiring temporary immobilisation.

The injured side may be resting, but the nervous system is still adaptable.

Sometimes the best way to protect the injured limb is to train the healthy one.
