A milestone day for Dr Shahana Abed with her first full mouth rehab, mentored and guided by Dr Ned throughout.

In one session: multiple-unit implant surgery, three immediates, a crestal lift, a delayed implant, a surgical wisdom tooth removal, and 7 crown preps.

This is what mentorship looks like in practice, experienced clinicians guiding complex cases in real time, so skills are built in surgery, not just seminars.

One of my favourite things about partnering with is something most patients never get to see.

We ask our patients to trust us with their smiles every day. But behind the scenes, we also trust each other with ours.

The other day, I watched fit a new crown for It was such a quick appointment, but it was a powerful reminder that expertise doesn’t replace trust—it strengthens it.

The best dentists never stop learning. They still ask questions, seek second opinions, value each other’s experience, and confidently sit in each other’s chairs when it’s their own smile on the line.

That’s the culture I’m proud to be part of.

Because when a team trusts each other enough to become each other’s patients, it says more than any marketing ever could.

That’s Smile On culture.

One of the most valuable things I’ve ever studied is communication psychology.

Patients rarely respond to information alone. They respond to how that information is delivered. Your tone of voice, facial expression, pace, confidence, body language, and ability to listen often communicate far more than the words themselves.

Behavioural science also teaches us that people are often more motivated to avoid a loss than to pursue an equivalent gain. Rather than simply explaining the benefits of treatment, helping patients understand what they may lose by delaying or declining treatment—function, comfort, bone, tooth structure, time, or future treatment options—can make the consequences clearer. This should always be done honestly, ethically, and without creating fear.

The goal is never to persuade someone into treatment.

The goal is to help them make an informed decision they truly understand.

Communication isn’t separate from dentistry.

It is dentistry.
I am very good at working.

Building.
Studying.
Teaching.
Creating.
Solving problems.

Resting? That’s the skill I’m still learning.

For a long time, I viewed rest as something you earned after everything was done. The problem is that for ambitious people, everything is never done.

There is always another patient to help, another course to create, another goal to chase, another responsibility waiting.

But I’ve slowly learned that rest isn’t the opposite of productivity.

It’s what makes productivity sustainable.

The body whispers before it screams. The mind does too.

So if you’re someone who feels guilty for slowing down, this is your reminder that rest is not falling behind.

Sometimes rest is the work.

I’m still learning this one myself. šŸ¤
Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned in dentistry didn’t come from a clinical textbook or a hands-on course. They came from understanding people. While many of us focus on improving our technical skills, one qualification transformed the way I care for patients in a completely different way.

It was Mental Health First Aid.

And it has made me a better dentist.

Not because I’m diagnosing mental health conditions in the surgery. That’s not my role.

But because it taught me to see what might be sitting behind the chief complaint.

The patient who ā€œjust wants a cleanā€ may be carrying years of shame.

The patient who keeps cancelling may not be difficult or disinterested.

The patient who hasn’t seen a dentist in a decade may not be neglectful.

Sometimes they’re anxious.Sometimes they’re overwhelmed.Sometimes they’re grieving.Sometimes they’re simply doing the best they can.

Mental health first aid taught me how to listen without judgment, respond without making things worse, and create a space where people feel safe enough to begin.

The longer I practice, the more convinced I become that oral health and mental health are deeply connected.

When we understand that, our consultations change.

Our language changes.

Our patience changes.

And often, our outcomes change too.

Because behind every set of teeth is a human being with a story.

And sometimes the most important thing we do is make sure they feel seen.

Mindset Minute

A few years ago, I was rebuilding a career.

Today, I find myself boarding planes before sunrise, flying into regional communities, mentoring clinicians, placing implants, teaching, learning, and stretching myself in ways I never imagined.

Growth is a beautiful thing—but it rarely happens inside your comfort zone.

Being a FIFO clinician has taught me that success is not just about adding more achievements to your CV. It’s about finding purpose in the work, staying connected to your values, and remembering why you started in the first place.

I am incredibly grateful to be part of a company that believes in investing in people, education, and patient care. To work alongside mentors who continue to challenge me, guide me, and share their knowledge so generously is something I never take for granted.

Every flight, every course, every difficult case, and every conversation is another opportunity to learn.

So today, my wish for you is this:

May your career grow.
May your opportunities expand.
May your confidence deepen.

But may your peace, your relationships, your health, and your sense of self never be the price you pay for success.

The goal isn’t simply to build a career.

It’s to build a life you’re proud to come home to. āœˆļøšŸ¤

Clinical skills matter, but connection is what patients remember.

Dr Shahana believes the reason patients continue to return to her, even with long wait times, comes down to one thing: trust and connection

Making patients feel heard, seen and genuinely cared for is one of the most important parts of being a clinician. Because great dentistry goes beyond treatment - it’s about human connection.

Comment ā€œTRUSTā€ and we’ll send you the link to the full episode.
Experience teaches you that patients don’t choose dentists because of clinical skill.
They choose the clinician who makes them feel understood. Makes them feel seen.
One of the most valuable qualifications I’ve gained isn’t in dentistry at all—it’s becoming a certified NLP coach.

Why?

Because patients don’t always tell you what’s really going on and you need to read between the lines almost all the time.

ā€œI’ll think about it.ā€
ā€œI’m not ready yet.ā€
ā€œIt seems expensive.ā€

Often, those words aren’t the real objection.
Sometimes it’s fear.
Sometimes it’s embarrassment.
Sometimes it’s a lack of trust.
Sometimes it’s a previous experience they haven’t shared.

NLP taught me to listen beyond the words.

To pay attention to communication patterns, emotional cues, and the concerns that patients struggle to articulate.

It has helped me create a calmer, safer experience for anxious patients and build stronger connections from the very first conversation.

Perhaps more importantly, it has taught me about myself.

It has helped me recognise my own behaviour patterns, regulate my emotions under pressure, communicate more intentionally, and stay grounded when situations become challenging.

Clinical excellence will always matter.

But the ability to understand people, build trust, and help someone feel genuinely seen—that’s where great dentistry begins.
I am insanely passionate about good skin. Much like most things in life that are worth having, beautiful skin requires commitment, not miracle. Real skin has texture, pores and even the occasional blemish. The goal is healthy skin, not perfect skin; and healthy skin is the most apparent reflection of our overall wellness. Your skin is your best accessory and glowing skin is the result of none other than proper skincare. You will be hearing much about bespoke, personalised medical grade skincare.
