Anger, sadness, isolation, relief, resentment, confusion, emptyness, helplessness, numbness, embarrassment, overwhelmed, anxiousness, grief, bitterness. And so much more.
Its all acceptable and natural. Itâs okay to experience a wide range of emotions about the loss.
Itâs also okay to experience these emotions for any kind of loss. Even one you chose, expected, and desired.
Loss is so complicated.
Iâm so sorry if this is your experience. If you have a therapist let them know what youâre feeling. If you donât I recommend having one to process your experience. There are even free online groups through that can help you.
Sending you love and space for healing. â¤ď¸âđŠš

I havenât been very open online about my own experience with postpartum anxiety. As a perinatal psychiatrist I have always been told that my own experiences should be kept quiet. Because Iâm supposed to be super human? Truly, Iâm opening up because I think sharing my humanity can help save someoneâs life or help someone enjoy their pregnancy or postpartum and I canât find a valid reason to stay quiet anymore when those are the potential outcomes of sharing.
I was checking on my baby often, unable to sleep when I had the chance (I spent so many hours studying for boards while experiencing insomnia or while breastfeeding in the middle of the night!), feeling so wound up and on edge.
I didnât receive treatment for years because I thought âof course this is hard, Iâm a new attending and I have two under one and a half!â but it was even more than that.
Perinatal anxiety can affect up to 1 in 4 postpartum people.
1 in 5. Thatâs how many new and expecting parents experience perinatal mental health conditions.
Theyâre not rare.
And yet most donât know where to turn or that what theyâre feeling even has a name.
May is Maternal Mental Health Month. This is our moment to connect the dots. Between the statistics and the story. Between the person struggling and the support that exists.
Iâm joining and âs #connectthedots campaign.

Together, we can change whatâs possible.
When we exist in a system that doesnât support new parents mental health outcomes are worse.
Protective factors for mental health:
-strong community
-safety
-access to food and shelter
-low conflict in close relationships
-consistent prenatal and postnatal care
-lactation support if breastfeeding
-sense of control or agency
-cultural celebration of motherhood
-support with household tasks
-child rearing education
A reminder that we are ALL negatively impacted by patriarchal systems.

The truth is, this is something that we already have known, and this meta-analysis came to the same conclusion as the studies that have come before it.
This is further evidence of the safety of the current available treatments for depression and anxiety during pregnancy.
I am so grateful that this information is becoming more publicly discussed and truly believe when we talk about these things and the data around treatment options more people will feel comfortable with treatment and be able to enjoy their pregnancy and postpartum experience.

And sheâs not wrong: sleep deprivation can impact your mental health, emotional regulation, and even increase your risk for postpartum depression or anxiety.
Hereâs the goal:
âď¸ 5 hours of sleep in a row
âď¸ 7 hours total in a 24-hour period (including naps!)
It might not be easyâbut it is possible.
Here are a few ways to protect your sleep during the postpartum period:
đź Split the night with a partner
Each of you takes a shift so at least one parent gets uninterrupted sleep.
đ°ď¸ Use naps strategically
Even a 20â30 minute nap during the day can make a difference. Set an alarm, put your phone away, and rest.
đ§âđź Feed, then pass the baby
After a middle-of-the-night feeding, hand the baby off for burping, diaper changes, or soothing so you can fall back asleep quickly.
đ¤ Create a sleep-friendly environment
White noise, blackout curtains, and a âwind downâ ritual (even 2 minutes) help signal your brain itâs time to restâeven if itâs just a nap.
đ§ Remind yourself: this isnât forever
Getting what you can, when you can, counts. Small stretches of sleep add up.
You deserve support, you deserve sleep, and you donât have to do this alone.
This is the kind of real, honest support I share on More Than Mom with Dr. Nichelle Haynesâa podcast for women in the thick of it who want to feel like themselves again.
đ§ Episodes are out nowâwherever you get your podcasts.
And, medications can often be less risky than experiencing these conditions!
You are not alone. You are not to blame. Help is available, and healing is possible. If you have questions about your risk factors or treatment options talk to your doctor or other health professional.
Letâs break the silence, reduce the stigma, and support every motherâs mental well-being.
This podcast is a gift to every mom whoâs ever thought, âI love my kids, but I miss me.â
Itâs for the women navigating motherhood while trying to hold on to their identity, their joy, their wholeness.
Each episode offers honest conversations, expert insight, and small shifts that make a big impact on your mental health. Weâll talk about things like:
đ§ Matrescence
đ¤ Sleep (and the lack of it)
𫶠Guilt and perfectionism
đŹ Identity and rediscovery
đą Finding joy again, finding yourself
Because you deserve more than survival. You deserve support, laughter, validation, and a soft place to land.
Follow now so you donât miss the first episodes dropping May 11thâa present to moms everywhere. đ
