Last year I posted for this day a little over a month after receiving Carolina’s diagnosis. Our family was still in shock, but a bright spot was receiving all the support from my online community and the major donation we were able to facilitate to.
This year, we continue to love and celebrate Carolina every day. She has learned so many fine and gross motor skills, showed us a love of music and swimming, and started giving the best hugs and kisses.
In today’s world, it is more crucial than ever to raise support of rare genetic syndromes and people with neurological and intellectual differences. The thing I want most in the world is for Carolina to exist in a loving and supportive world, where she is treated with kindness and understanding. A world where other people value children and adults with disabilities and are committed to supporting their education, medical and environmental needs, and those of their caregivers. What is a Crisis Pregnancy Center? “CPC is a term used to refer to certain facilities that represent themselves as legitimate reproductive health care clinics providing care for pregnant people but actually aim to dissuade people from accessing certain types of reproductive health care, including abortion care and even contraceptive options.” -ACOG.
This is the opposite of what the women of Texas need. Oh, and our tax dollars are paying for it.

Smith Magenis Syndrome effects about 1/15,000 to 1/25,000 people. It can be under-diagnosed due to overlap with autism and other behavioral disorders. It can be caused by either a microdeletion of a portion of chromosome 17 or a mutation in the predominant gene, RAI-1.
I’m new to being a rare disease parent. It is hard. I protect the privacy of my kids but I share Carolina’s story because I want the world to be kind to her, I want people to treat her with open and loving acceptance, I want them to have patience when her differences can be challenging. I want people who make decisions on how to support people and families with disabilities to be generous. I want the world to be better for her.

As an MFM I love managing complex medical diagnoses in pregnancy, but I wish other specialists would work with us and patients instead of refusing to care for them. Likewise, for most medications and conditions, a well controlled and healthy pregnant person increases the health of the pregnancy more than the risks of most medications. OBGYNs and MFMs are here to help! But pregnancy should not be viewed as solely cared for by us, you have a responsibility to thorough and equitable care for all patients, including pregnant ones!
