In healthy adipose tissue, adipocytes have uniform size, good distribution and preserved vascularisation. In lipedema, there is an abnormal increase in adipocytes, formation of nodules, persistent interstitial oedema, chronic inflammation and fibrosis, which hardens the tissue and reduces its mobility.
