Annual exams aren’t just vaccines and bloodwork… sometimes they also include a baboon manicure.
While this hamadryas baboon was under anesthesia for her yearly exam, we gave her nails a trim, because unlike in the wild, zoo life doesn’t always wear them down enough naturally. Overgrown nails can crack or snag, so routine trims help keep everything in working order.
Of course, this is probably the only time a hamadryas baboon willingly agrees to spa day activities. Normally their opinions on nail care are expressed loudly or even a bit dramatically.
Hamadryas baboons are incredibly intelligent, extremely strong, and live in some of the most socially complex groups of any primate.
Annual exams are our chance to handle all the important maintenance: bloodwork, dental checks, radiographs, ultrasound exams, vaccines, and occasionally a primate pedicure. Preventive medicine… but make it fashionable.

Those thick pads on the backside of a hamadryas baboon are called ischial callosities, specialized areas of toughened skin that primates like baboons use as built-in sitting pads. Since these animals spend huge portions of their day perched on rocks, branches, and hard ground, evolution essentially gave them natural cushions.
But underneath that thick skin is an incredibly rich blood supply. The tissue is highly vascular because it still needs constant nourishment and temperature regulation despite being under pressure for much of the day. That dense network of vessels is also why these areas can look bright pink, red, or even change color depending on circulation, hormones, and social status.
And yes… they are surprisingly squishy. Probably not the scientific term, but accurate.

Sand cats are one of the smallest wild cat species in the world and are specially adapted for life in harsh desert environments. Their thick fur-covered paws help protect them from hot sand, and those oversized ears aren’t just adorable, they help them detect prey moving underground. Native to parts of North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, sand cats can survive in extremely dry habitats with very little free-standing water.
The kittens handled their exams like pros… angry, growly, adorable pros.

Dr. Penning recently announced his retirement as Vice President of Animals, Science, and Environment for Disney Experiences, part of the Walt Disney Company. There he has overseen animal care, conservation, and environmental initiatives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida and Disney parks around the world.
“I am excited that Dr. Mark Penning will soon be joining the North Carolina Zoo,” said Governor Josh Stein. “His leadership, experience, and vision will enable him to take the North Carolina Zoo, the world’s largest natural habitat Zoo, to the next level and enhance the visitor experience. I can’t wait to see what he and the team at the Zoo create.”
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Penning joining us at DNCR and the North Carolina Zoo,” said DNCR Secretary Pamela B. Cashwell. “He is a world leader in animal care and conservation and truly understands and supports the Zoo’s mission.”
A veterinarian by training with a special interest in wildlife, Dr. Penning previously served as CEO of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research in Durban, South Africa. He has also served as president of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and as a board member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Dr. Penning currently sits on the board of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International and serves as a Trustee of Wild Welfare, an animal welfare organization.
“I am very excited to be moving to the beautiful state of North Carolina and joining the fabulous team at the North Carolina Zoo,” Penning said. “I have long admired the zoo with its stunningly picturesque setting, modern animal habitats, engaging experiences for visitors, and talented team of zoo professionals. They have created a world-class destination where families can connect with nature and with each other and experience the joy and wonder of being outdoors. It is an honor and a privilege for me to join the team.”
Dr. Penning will begin his tenure as Director of the North Carolina Zoo this summer.
And it’s not just about care here. Gorillas in the wild face serious pressure from habitat loss, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade.
At the North Carolina Zoo, we support conservation efforts by funding ranger patrols, monitoring population health, and using SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) technology to combat illegal activity. We also focus on protecting the critically endangered Cross River gorilla in Nigeria and partner with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in Rwanda.

She had strength, intelligence, and a presence that commanded respect, but those who earned her trust also got to see her gentle side. Tammy did not give that trust easily, which made it all the more meaningful when she did.
Making the decision to say goodbye was incredibly difficult, but it was the final act of love and compassion we could give her. Her comfort, dignity, and welfare always came first.
