To all the mamas out there, I was so humbled by 1st trimester. Learning to navigate all the nausea and fatigue while pretending everything was ok in clinic and the OR is another level of stamina I didn’t know I had lol. Women are incredible
- the big number 6-0 refers to the suture thickness (sorry typo here, not the needle). The larger the number, the smaller the suture (ex. 10-0 is a tiny suture used in ocular surgery; vs 1-0 which is large and used for abdominal surgery)
- Suture material: there are so many. Commonly used ones in my field include prolene, nylon, silk - which are all non-absorbable sutures (won’t dissolve on their own). Others such as plain gut, vicryl, chromic are absorbable sutures that will dissolve over time.
- Needle Shape in Cross Section: examples include Spatula, Reverse-Cutting, Cutting, Taper. Spatula needles are flat on the inner & outer surface and good for things like a scleral pass in strabismus surgery. Reverse cutting is sharp at the outer edge. Cutting is sharp at the inner edge. Taper needle is sharp just at the tip and good for delicate structures like the conjunctiva.

Interesting debate in the comments section of what the term “doctor” should entail - I didn’t realize the term was so nuanced, so thank you for everyone’s thoughts.
Of note, I go to sleep before 9pm almost every day. And I wasn’t able to devote this amount of time to training, while I was in residency/fellowship. We also don’t have kids yet.
