Just minutes from downtown Nanaimo, Protection Island feels like stepping into a slower pace of life. This small island is reached by a short passenger ferry ride from Nanaimo Harbour and is known for its quiet beaches, gravel roads, forest trails, and relaxed community vibe.

Fun fact: there are no paved roads on the island, and many locals get around by golf cart or wheelbarrow! It’s also home to the famous Dinghy Dock Pub — Canada’s only floating pub. A full walk around the island is about 4–5 km with beautiful ocean views almost the entire way.

Tucked away in the forests of Sooke, the historic Flowline Trail is one of the most unique hikes on Vancouver Island. 🌿🐾

Azu and I explored sections of the old concrete water pipeline that once carried water to Victoria, with mossy forest views, narrow paths, bridges, and steep drop-offs along the route.

This trail can be very dangerous in places, especially when wet. Some sections are slippery, uneven, unmaintained, and close to cliffs or ravines, so extra caution is definitely needed. The CRD has also warned that parts of the flowline corridor are considered hazardous and not actively maintained.

If you visit, wear proper footwear, avoid risky edges, and take your time out there.

Tucked away in the forests above Cumberland, the China Bowls are one of Vancouver Island’s coolest hidden swimming spots. 🏞️

This short forest hike leads to a series of smooth rock formations, rushing waterfalls, and deep crystal-clear pools carved out by the river over thousands of years. In the summer, it’s a popular place to cool off, explore the rocks, or simply relax and enjoy the sound of the water.

The trail is fairly short and easy, but the rocks around the bowls can be slippery, especially near the water, so good footwear is recommended. Whether you’re visiting for a swim, photos, or just a peaceful nature walk, the China Bowls are definitely worth adding to your Vancouver Island adventure list.

Tucked away inside Goldstream Provincial Park, Niagara Falls is one of Vancouver Island’s most beautiful hidden waterfall hikes. The trail winds through lush forest, wooden bridges, and towering trees before leading to the powerful falls cascading through the canyon below. 🌲🌊

This popular hike is especially impressive after rainfall when the waterfall is at full force. The trail can be steep and muddy in sections, so good footwear is recommended. Along the way you’ll also find classic Goldstream scenery including moss-covered forest, rushing creeks, and plenty of photo opportunities.

A great adventure just outside Victoria for hikers, photographers, and nature lovers looking to explore one of the island’s hidden gems.

Azu and I wandered through the colourful streets of Chemainus, one of Vancouver Island’s most unique little seaside towns. Known as the “Mural Town,” Chemainus is filled with massive outdoor murals, sculptures, cozy cafes, ocean views, and historic buildings around nearly every corner.

Chemainus became famous for its mural revitalization project in the 1980s and now features dozens of large murals and sculptures telling the story of the town’s coastal and logging history #explorevancouverisland #nearmevictoria #explorebc.
Tucked away near Ladysmith is Stocking Creek Falls, this short forest hike leads through lush rainforest, moss-covered trees, and across a scenic wooden bridge to a beautiful hidden waterfall. 🌿💧

It’s a great quick stop if you’re travelling between Victoria and Nanaimo, and the trail is fairly easy with lots of peaceful west coast vibes along the way. Keep an eye out for towering cedars, ferns, rushing creek views, and plenty of spots for photos along the trail.

Definitely one of those little Vancouver Island gems worth checking out!
