What’s the most misunderstood part of being a professional artist?
"How many hats we wear. It’s lovely to imagine an art career as tapping into a flow state every day in a beautiful studio, The End. And true, getting to do what we love as a job is the best part. But to make it a living means running a business. We’re our own social media managers, agents, marketing strategists, publicists. We design our websites and manage sales. So much of what we do, we do ourselves, and that’s without counting making the actual art. The toughest part of the job can be reminding ourselves that not only do we deserve breaks, we need them; when your brain and body are the factory, self care is mandatory work."

"Iorek Byrnison"
Watercolor on paper, 11x14", 2026.

I'm honored to be a part of "Bibliophilia," a group show for the love of books, opening at this Wednesday, April 8th.

I have been so, so, so eager to finally reveal this piece. The “His Dark Materials” series by Philip Pullman has been something that I’ve carried with me since I was very young, it holds a special place in my heart. I’ve never expressed my appreciation through art, so when I was invited to contribute to Bibliophilia, it was the first thing that came to mind.

Keep an eye out on for links to see the show (or if you're lucky enough to be in New Zealand, be sure to stop by!)

"Forgives No One Just Yet," 2023. Watercolor.

Prints available at

We're in the throes of the first false spring here in New England, and while this isn't my first rodeo, the slightly longer days and warmer temps and melting snow have been thawing my heart. We all know it's likely going to get cold and crappy again before its here to stay, but the last few days has been a reminder that winter will end. If you get warmer or sunnier days where you are, GO OUTSIDE, even if its just for five minutes.

"Spectra" 2022. Watercolor on cold press. 11x15"

Original and prints available at

My first time experimenting with iridescence and snake scales, "Spectra" marked a big turning point in my relationship with broader color palettes and complex textures. I have a lot of really good memories of the painting process.

"I Met A Boy From Under The Ground," detail. 2024. Watercolor.

I've noticed some new followers lately, so I wanted to pop in and say thank you, welcome, and introduce myself. My name is Dory, I'm a New England based watercolorist. I love painting people, and spooky/weird/emotional/uncomfortable subjects. Nature, melancholia, death positivity, and light body horror are some themes I like to explore in my work. Sometimes I make fanart of gay pirates and angels and demons because it makes me happy.

Painting is the love of my life and its also how I keep the lights on. I sell prints of my work and originals on my website:
I'm also on Patreon, and Kofi where I'm currently raising funds to replace my printer. I also take commissions on a project-by-project basis, feel free to send an inquiry email!

art vs artist, 2025 edition.

This year has been.....a year. Woof. It didn't break me but it sure did try.

It's been a year of colors. It's been a year of deep self doubt, I haven't felt so unsure about my own capabilities as an artist in a very long time. It's been a year of physical challenges and healing my bones and flesh. It's been a year of emotional roulette, of being grateful that I was able to support my friends through difficult times, and realizing that I need some support. It's been a year of nature, and exploring new spaces outside and looking closer at familiar ones. It's been a year of being tested and of learning, as I undertook my first solo gallery project and am trying to sort out how I feel about it. Of trying new ways to shape my career and figuring out what I like, what I don't like, what I'd do differently. It's been a year of heavy.

I'm looking forward to new things still. Somehow after everything I feel invigorated. Let's go. Happy new year 🖤

(It's also been a year of pretty much zero selfies, the pic is from February but fingers crossed, I'll be dying my hair this color again soon)
